Attention ! Australian Sleevers

This puree stuff is so weird. It is strange to actually not be able to finish 1/2 cup. Also, I screwed up and lunch got way delayed so now I have no idea how I am going to get in afternoon snack AND dinner. I am running outta time. :(

Welcome Cathy!!

Hope everyone is well!! Sounds like things are going well.

Did anyone watch Insight tonight? So disappointed in the program and the poor moderation. It did nothing to address the rampant discrimination of obese people in our society. I would go so far as to say it was yet another example of discrimination in action. Very saddened by this...

No I didn't watch it, but the Australian media is so harsh on obese people in general. We listen to the ABC all the time and every time there is a segment on the "obesity epidemic" I feel like obese people get all of the blame and shame. I feel like in Australia, anyone with more than a 30 BMI is considered huge. It really brings up a lot of mixed feelings for me. I'm glad I am losing weight and will be a lean person, but I also feel ambivalent about conforming to society's expectations about my body!

I hope that doesn't sound crazy to you guys.

I hope I do better on meal timing today. I'm also thinking about next week. My husband will be out of town. Being alone at home is a huge binge trigger for me. I physically can't binge right now so I'm just wondering how I will cope? I guess I will go for a walk if the urge strikes!

I missed the story but have seen that alot of people were not happy about it.

I dont think it is just the media but we as Aussies are harder on overweight people than anything...especially when it comes to medical professionals. Any health issue that I had the first response was loose some weight, got the flu, loose some weight, yes I may sound a bit jaded. Which in most cases that issue had nothing to do with being overweight..I went to see a specialist for another issue yesterday (and will have surgery again later today...whirlwind..anyways) but most my conversation centered around the fact that I had had the sleeve and the weight I had lost, rather than the issue I went to see him about.

I think of how society treats overweight people and it makes me sick...(rant over)

I agree Aussiegirl - people are very harsh when they have never experienced being truly overweight and having to lose the amount of weight we have all had get off while dealing with ravenous hunger and constant triggers and temptation, is near impossible. Until you have walked in someone else's shoes ....

I say put them on the preop diet of 700 calories and then tell them that they have to live the rest of their life feeling that hungry! They would stampeding Maccas!

I also agree with Aussiegirl!!! People have no idea!

Kim, how is ur recovery going?

I've got a question for anyone who was on the pre-op diet. I have been noticing that my teeth are getting sore/sensitive. Plus they seem to have a brownish colour around them even though I brush them. Did anyone have this happen and if u did, did it go away???

Bec, I found that when I was on liquids only, my teeth would have an odd coating on them by halfway through the day and I had to brush them. Also my tongue would get a coating. I think it is all the Liquid Protein. If you are using high-quality shakes such as Optifast or Optislim you should be getting all your Vitamins and minerals from 3 shakes a day, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks Misty, i'm on Optifast 2 times a day and a small meal for dinner from the allowed list. My teeth are starting to bother me as they hurt and this is the only thing I can think has cause it :(

It was interesting for me watching this with my thunder cousins who were pro-thin people and argued that the overweight people were overly sensitive and yet, when the tables were turned on the thin people (they literally turned it around and asked the same rude questions they had just asked the obese audience members) not one single person answered. Yet the yelled and demanded the obese people do so. And my cousins, always so thin an pretty felt that the obese people had a chip on their shoulder. I pointed out that as an obese person (well I was until recently) if there was a chip on my shoulder I would have known about it... And probably eaten it but that is irreverent- I mean irrelevant :)

I don't want to make light of it but geez if you don't laugh you'll cry!!

Misty I'm sure everyone is different with how to cope with these feeling to just eat ... I mean EATTT! :)

What worked for me is not ignoring that I was having those thoughts / feelings. I'd identify that I was feeling that way and I took a lot of time to recognise it and let it sit with me.

Part of the problem previously for me was not knowing I was feeling that way and I'd be too far down the road before I'd put the brakes on. A bit too late normally.

Don't know if that makes any sense or is of any help, but it's how I processed it.

Deano

This last little bit of weight loss is weird. It's shown me how fickle your body is.

The last 10 weeks I've had .5 kilo loses with 2 two week stalls thrown in for good measure. It hasn't bothered me because I know with the cals I'm consuming I WILL continue to chip away at it.

Jumped on the scales today( Wednesday weekly weigh day) and BOOM 1.5 kg loss. I haven't done a thing different this week.

So 45 kilo's down, 10 to go ............

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
