Insurance Is Evil

Recommended Posts

Well, I learned today that my insurance, CareFirst BCBS, has an exclusion for bariatric surgery. I am totally frustrated. In 2009, I was in a different job with different insurance that had no coverage, so I paid cash for a band. It worked well for a year, at which time I moved to another city. I got off track and never recovered. I have now regained 40 of the 60 pounds I had lost -- and I already was not at goal.

The band is simply not working for me and my doc recommended a revision to the sleeve. Now I find out the insurance won't pay. I paid $11K for the band (which feels like a waste of money) and i just can't pay that kind of money again. So I guess I will look at the possibility of going to Mexico. All of the accounts I have seen from people who went there are positive.

I guess I am really just venting because I am super disappointed. I had planned a trip to Hawaii for later this summer, but I think I need to cancel that and shift the money to pay for the surgery.

I've read somewhere on a blog here that there is some type of loan company for the surgery or perhaps some of the surgeons in Mexico work out an arrangement. IDK but it's worth looking into.

Unfortunately, it is your employer who is evil. They choose what coverage you do or don't have, .it the insurance company. My company gave us bariatric coverage but it is so crappy that cash pay is cheaper! Good luck to you!

My initial assumption was that my employer chose not to include the coverage but I spoke with the member services person at the insurance company and the insurance coordinator at my doctor's office. Both told me this: WLS is not a mandatory coverage in DC. Because I work for a small employer, it isn't a situation in which they choose a list of options. Rather, there is a package that the insurance company has already put together and the coverage isn't even an option for them. Larger employers get to negotiate packages, so some opt to include it.

Now, this could be a crock, and it is totally different from what I thought. But I cannot imagine why both the doctor's office and the insurance company would have told me that were it untrue.

At any rate, whatever the reason, I don't have the coverage.

I had a friend who was approved through Kaiser. Once she found out they denied me she suggested Mexico. Since i had had another procedure in Mexico I didn't give it a second thought. I started my research to find the right doctor for me!!! So here I am..... Just six days from my sleeve

I actually never thought about surgery in Mexico until I started reading about it on this forum. Then I realized it makes perfect sense. I am a former journalist, so I knew that Medical Tourism is big; I just had never thought of partaking in it.

Kisha, you are gonna do great!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
