Tmi? - Ladies - Anyone Else Have Period Problems Post-Op?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved last Tuesday. They didn't let me take my birth control while I was in the hospital (2 nights). Doctor gave me the okay to resume taking them on Thursday night when I got home. He didn't tell me I need to crush them or anything since they were small enough. Despite having my period the week before surgery, I started spotting on Friday and feel like I've been having a mini-period ever since, despite taking the birth control regularly. Anyone else have this problem?

If it's not resolved itself tomorrow, I think I'm calling the doctor's office to figure out what the deal is because this is annoying and frustrating.

Totally normal. I have an Implanon implant in my arm and haven't gotten a period since I got it last March... EXCEPT for when I got sleeved.. I bled for two weeks straight - heavy too. Your body just went through a major trauma so its understandable things would get a bit out of whack.

I am peri menopausal and have a Mirena IUD and I started bleeding soon after the surgery. However, I stopped ofter a couple of weeks and haven't bled since. So thankful! ;)

Yeah, normal. In fact, when I had my lapband surgery, on our list of "things to bring" to the hospital were feminine products because surgery causes the blessed event to arrive early for some, or spotting for others.

And sure enough...day three there she was... lol.

I'm so glad I saw this post. I thought it was just me. I have pcos with irregular periods usually no periods. I had surgery 3/13 and on 4/5 had spotting then a 2.5 week long period. I thought it was my birth control (seasonique) so I stopped it. I guess I might start it again.

I'm not on any birth control methods and I've gotten my period three times in the past six weeks. I used to be very regular before the surgery.

You won't need to crush the BCP. pills that size should not be a problem. Having lived with a band for 6 years, I am amazed at how easy medications are to take. (With the band, I couldn't pass a tylenol).

My period came a week early, which never happens. I'm sometimes a day or two late, but never early, and never a full week early. My period normally lasts 3 days, and that time it lasted 6. Heaviness of flow, etc. was not noticeably different. I know my hormones were all out of whack (naturally they would be). In my 2nd week post-op I also broke out all over my chin, serious breakout. It's better now, but I'm still getting the occasional zit in the weird place (I have one in my nose now, and in my eyebrow). I'd had completely clear skin for years & years before this. Fat contains a lot of hormones. :)

I am not on any form of birth control and I was like clockwork before, now, since surgery , it comes for a day, goes away and comes back a few days later, very light like before but split up...weird.

Glad it's not just me. While frustrating I can handle it! I just wonder whether to keep taking the birth control for now since I take it to regulate my periods and that's clearly not working.

Definitely keep taking it - it causes more problems if you're taking it and then suddenly stop, and then start again, than it does to just continue taking it. Plus it will regulate your period, but right now as I said your body is adjusting to a MAJOR trauma... Also, if you're married or in a relationship and plan on having sex with your hubby./partner, you definitely need it. We are WAY more fertile post-op just in case you weren't aware. ;-)

Your hormones are out of wack! Keep taking the bc until you see your ob/gyn. Your hormones will balance out in due time. When was your surgery? ;)

I think what happened was the decrease in hormones because you did not take your pill those few days caused you to start or spot a little once you start taking your pill on a regular basis it should go away until you finish your pills for the month !

Ok, so I did a little digging to try and find a definitive answer and this is the closest I've come. Not a bad answer ;-)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
