Questions For Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I start my pre op diet tomorrow and just had some questions that hopefully ya can answer

1. Can I take appetite suppressant so that way I don't over eat?

2. I have heard several people saying they have two Protein Shakes and then a meal, what does the meal look like?

3. Are weight watcher items ok to have? For example I bought some Protein Bars from them?

4. What about yogurt which would you recommend?

5. Can I have progressive Soup?

6. I know I should of already started my Vitamins, I will be buying them today, so which ones should I get?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I am just so lost and don't want to mess anything up for my surgery date.

I believe every physician is different. My Dr required a 2 week liquid only diet. I drank Protein shakes, creamed and Tomato Soups. I also put high Protein Soup like progresso in my Nija, but the texture turned me off and I hated eating them. I wasted a lot of money. I ate mostly tomato soups and truly stuck to the liquids. The more protein you eat, the better you'll feel and stay fuller for longer periods of time. I love Iso Pure Dutch Choclate. I had been drinking that for years for Breakfast, so I was used to it. I hate a thick, sweet Protein Drink. I was NOT allowed any protein bars etc. You can eat yogurt and I found just a few Greeks that I could tolerate, Cottage cheese was another option as was Jello and popsicles . You will be fine after the first three days. I actually started before my 2 weeks and had already converted Breakfast and lunch to liquid.I believe it made it easier for me and having the yogurt or popcicles for Snacks .

As far as Vitamins, my Dr required a Vitamin that ws chewable and had a minimum of 18 mgs of Iron, so Flintsone chewables were the only ones I could find, I took 2 daily, I am three months out and could convert to a regular Centrum Ultra, but find since I have to take my Vitamins with food, I just don't have the room to take the pill with food and swallow it without Water or with a little Water. You fill up pretty fast. So I still use the Flintstones which I've acquired a taste for. Make sure you take two of the same flavor at the same time. If you mix the colors YUCK!

The best of luck to you.

1. I wouldn't take a suppressant. I thought about taking one but didn't, was scared it'd prevent me from having surgery. The pre op appointment they did blood work and I didn't want anything interfering with it to give a reason not to have surgery. Because also they tell you to stop taking certain types of meds few weeks before surgery due to them interfering with anesthesia, etc. I found that on my liquid diet after the 3rd day my body adjusted and I wasn't as hungry. When in doubt, ask your doc bout the appetite suppressant.

2. Meals are like a chicken breast/turkey/fish with veggies such as broccoli, green Beans, etc. Non starchy veggies.

What type of pre op diet does your surgeon have you on? Low carb? Liquid? Low Fat? My surgeon gave my a hand out of my diet and examples of what I could have. If they didn't give you one I'd ask for examples.

I had Protein Shakes for breakfast and lunch. SF Jello & SF Popsicle for Snacks. Tomato/chicken bullion usually around 4pm if I got hungry before dinner time. I had a small meal in the evening too, 3 oz of Protein and vegetables - some nights I had broiled or baked fish and sauteed vegs (brocolli, carrots, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, red peppers, yellow peppers in olive oil spray). Other nights I made salads with Canadian bacon chopped up, some avocado, carrots, tomatoes, etc. They were great and 3 oz of Canadian bacon is quite a bit of meat so I was not missing anything. They filled me up and I lost 13 lbs on mine and my liver was fabulous according to my surgeon.

Also, if you decide or your dietician recommends the 2-3 shakes a day with a small meal remember you don't have to do the meal for dinner. Sometimes I had the meal for lunch at work and then had a shake for dinner. This helped those long days at work :)

No, just did the same diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery. No laxatives or colon cleanse.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
