Not At All What I Expected!

Recommended Posts

Today is my 5th day out. I woke up in the morning with pain all over my stitches completely weak and my whole body was shacking. My whole recovery has been really hard. I had to call my husband to come and get me because I'm not only feeling weak physically but emotionally since I never thought that the recovery part could be so hard. I got sleeved to get better but sometimes it makes me sad to think what I have done to my body. I was sooooo excited to get my sleeve and everyday my thoughts were strongly positive that I never thought that something could go wrong. Am I alone in this? I'm very scared that this was way more than I could handle it. I'm such a vibrant and positive person that I'm surprised of this outcome

I am sorry you are having such a hard time. Are you getting your fluids in okay? Dehydration is serious business and will make you feel horrible.

The stitches will itch and be somewhat painful for the first week and sometimes longer. Are you taking your pain meds?

I am hoping and praying that you have called your surgeon and will update us soon.

Every change brings a type of grief process. I wondered, "WTFoof have I done?" I felt weak, and awful, and in pain. I hated depending on others to help me. I hated the post-op diet. I went through Christmas without being able to eat. I had no energy.

BUT: About the 8th or 9th week, something clicked. I couldn't believe the changes I saw in the mirror. My energy started coming back.

Hang in there. You will get healthy. You will get better. You've undergone MAJOR surgery, a shock to the body, and your body has to find its balance again. I would do it all over again, with no regrets. Do what your doc says, heal, and what you are going through now will be but a distant memory. Truly.

I was told before getting sleeved that a person may experience some VERY strong emotions after surgery. I'm almost 4 wks post op and I will admit that I've had those "what have I done" feelings. A lot of yours may be associated with having such a rough recovery. Once you physically start to feel better you'll emotionally feel better as well. I know it may not seem like it but every day does get better and better. Hang in there!!!!

Hi thanks I did call him but he's not the most helpfull person. I do think I've been lacking on hydration. I'm trying harder but I don't want to fill up my sleeve too much and following the rule of stop drinking 1/2 hour before and after food. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer I appreciate it

I'm so sorry you are having a hard time. The amazing thing about this recovery is that, God willing, one day pretty soon, you will just wake up and feel so much better. Keep your chin up and be happy that you are on the way to taking control of your weight!

What is your post op diet? I'm also 5 days out and only allowed liquids. You say you're trying to follow the 1/2 hr no drinking before meal rule. Right now the most important thing u can do is drink drink drink. Im so sorry your not feeling well. Keep drinking and walking when u can. Hang in there.

I finally decided to go ahead with this surgery in June. My husband had the lapband and kept on eating as usual , as expected he is not supporting me with this decision. Others tell me I should try other ways to loose weight. I am so mad and I am afraid that I will feel the way are feeling. I question my self , I know this is my choice and my health. I have seen all the great outcomes and I am scared and excited. I keep thinking that it is such a short face, compare to the lifetime of rewards. It is worth it! ????

At about week 3 I was furious...I actually blamed my husband and felt like he pushed me to have the surgery. I was really moodyand regreted my decision. But I spoke to a friend and got on VST and found out that my hormones were all wacked up because of the dump of estrogen from fat burning happening in my almost starving body. Once I had an answer I was able to deal and just move on. And a week later I apolozied to my husband and he forgave me! Things will get better:) Hang in there.

Those first couple of weeks are hard. Some people have a harder time than others. Just remember there is light at the end of the tunnel and you will slowly start to feel better.

Nope I was sleeved Tuesday and feel the same. Recovery has hard and even stayed an extra day in hopital. I am weak from no food and I am forcing myself to drink Water.

The hard part is the spare time I now have since my life is no longer planned around food. It leaves me to think about me and food will never be the same again, but this is what I wanted right?

I am not giving up. You can't either.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
