Why No Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

Ok I'm having surgery on April 20, my pre-op appointment is April 18. My doctor has not put me on any pre-op liquid diet. I have lost 65 pounds preparing for sugery, i dont know if thats relevent. My question is anybody else not get liquid diet and how will this affect my surgery?

Wow - 65lbs! Well done.

My surgery date is 26th April and I've been given a diet sheet to follow eg Breakfast = 1x mixed grain bread toasted with a tiny bit of low far spread. snack mid-morning is half pot of yoghurt with Almond shavings (the other half is for afternoon snack with fruit), lunch is an open sandwich and dinner is 4oz of meat or Quorn product... I should say this is not accurate and is from memory as I am on holiday with family in Tenerife just now, but my dietician prefers patients to get used to the type and amount of food in preparation for post-op life rather than shakes. Perhaps, as you have obviously been hugely successful dieting pre-op he's happy for you to continue doing what you are doing?! I should be starting my pre-op diet tomorrow but won't be able to until we get home on Sat. Getting a bit worried about it so might well resort to shakes to catch up just don't tell my dietician!

The very best of luck on the 20th. Keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on:)

I was under the impression that the purpose of the pre-op (liquid) diet was to shrink the liver so it's easier to lift up out of the way during the procedure.

Perhaps your surgeon feels your 63 pound weight loss has shrunk your liver for you already?

Congrats on your pre-op weight loss, btw. That's impressive. Best of luck with your surgery.

I was also given a preop diet to follow in order to shrink my liver. I was on a lowfat Atkins diet. If that's basically how you are eating now, I would say you are good to go.

Best of luck on the surgery! Please keep us posted!

No pre-op diet for me. When I asked the surgeon about shrinking the liver he just laughed and said he could work with any size liver.

Wow, good for you losing all that weight before surgery! I too, did not need a pre-op diet. All doctors are different I suppose. Mine just frankly doesn't believe it does any good. . . he told me i could go ahead and do it if i wanted to, but it wasn't necessary. The liver, he said, takes longer then 2 weeks to shrink and he just didn't see the point of it. . . soooooo with that said, i'm sure there are others who'll disagree, but whatever. . . he also stated that my BMI wasn't high enough and that i was on the "small" side (hahaha, that one made me laugh) at 350 lbs "on the small side". . . so don't fret any, i'm out now 3 years and haven't had any type of problems except for malabsorption, but thank goodness for Vitamins and doctors for that one! good luck!

Did you have malabsorption issues with the sleeve?

I was only on a pre-op diet for 10 days prior to surgery and it was no sugar, and no starchy carbs. Normally, too, the pre-op diet requires only 4 ounces of meat per day, but since I was "close" to not qualifying, I didn't need to adhere to the limited meat requirement. I lost 5 pounds in those 10 days - huh! Good luck to you!!

No pre-op diet for me. We just had to learn how to eat after the initial liquid, mushy stuff and learn about labels and all that nutrition stuff.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
