not planning on telling

greetings all! I introduced my self on BMI 35 thread. not planning on telling anyone but hubby (he is suppotive and will go to Mexico as well as shell out $$). I just am not ready to deal with anyone's judgement or opinion on MY weight issues (X husband who is soul mate). I have mainly thin friends who have NO concept of what is it like to be overweight and feel NO control over issues. "Why don't you just go on a diet and exercise?" Done that and have the t-shirt. No permanant change for me. Only more weight to lose and another feelingof failure. My husband is a dentist and I joked with him many times about just wiring my mouth shut. It is a personal thing- I just want to lose weight for me and have other people not even notice. I am not even telling teenage kids. (If I did I might as well announce it to the world- My cheerleader daughter would accidently let it slip, I'm sure. ) My question is- is it possilbe or advisable- to keep this secret at least for now? Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks for the help--This a great site. I wish I were a faster typer, but alas I did not take typing in school. Who knew there would be an inernet and typing would be a very good skill to have?!?

(to stangers or when I just don't want to explain myself) That I am on a "restrictive diet" under medical supervision. I think that will be close enough to the truth!! Date: 6/25/04

I also told only a select few. My reasons were the same as the others posted. I did not want to be in a fish bowl or have everyone asking me how much weight I've lost each day. I dont feel that I need to explain myself to anyone. I definitely think it's an individual decision.

One thing I've learned since being banded in March is that I like to introduce myself to new foods when I'm at home, alone with my immediate family. Initially it wont be easy swallowing certain food (fruits and even some vegetables included) unless you cut them into extremely small portions. For this reason I skipped social gatherings until I knew how my body would handle those foods. This might be something you'll want to remember if you're not going to share with anyone outside of your husband.

This has been my experience on who to tell? I just had my lapband done May 25th and initially told just immediate family members and two close friends. I was reluctant to tell a sister who quite frankly, has been condescending relative to my weight gain over the past ten years. To my surprise.... my two close friends were more than supportive and did have the capacity and sensitivity to understand the weight struggle (they both have weight issues but are not considered morbidly obese as I am.) My point being, I for one, am glad I chose to take a leap of faith and tell them because I do have thier support and it helps a lot, with one caveat, do not tell people that you know are not supportive or opportunistic in trying to sabatoge your weight loss journey. Just my two cents.
