When Did You Start Protein Drinks After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

hi

My dr doesnt worry about Protein for the first month. That doesnt sit right with me at all as I know our bodies need the Proteins.Usually when people up their Proteins to the 60g minimum we need, they lose weight faster anyhow.

Please tell me on day what did you start taking protein after the surgery?

Thanks for all the smart advice that always pours in.It is so difficult to be completely objective about stuff at this point.

xxo

Very strange that your doctor should say that. You can or should start introducing Protein liquids into your diet at about 2 weeks post op.

If you look at food & Nutrition and Pre-op and Post-op Diets sections in the forum you will find many posts on types of Protein drinks and supplements.

Hope this helps.

Good luck :)

I had two start drinking Protein Shakes twice a day at 1 week post op. at 2 weeks post op it went down to once a day, because I could start eating Proteins ( that went through a blender.

It's not that Protein is unimportant, it's because liquid intake is vital to survival whereas protein can be put on the back burner for a limited time if need be. Your initial capacity is very limited immediately after surgery because of swelling so you may not be able to ingest all of your fluids and protein, too. If that proves to be the case then keeping yourself hydrated is job 1.

Hi,ok so I had a lapband before, with complications.Taste of things does not matter and I have learned to do what I have to.Since yesterday I have tried to mix the Isopure whey isolate into about 500 ml of Water....it is like Water with a drop of milk really.

The thing is I do not add any milk and it still gives me a huge amount of gas that just rumbles around in my insides.I get a tightness around my ribcage which I suppose might be gas inside my tummy and I get the phlem in the back of my throat that tells me it is gas.O,and a very fluffy feeling on the back of my tongue that drives me nuts.

Ultimately even though I can drink just fine maybe the tummy is not ok enough to tolerate the Protein yet.

I will wait another day and try again.Until I suppose at some point it will just be fine.

thanks for the info.

xxo

They made me try one in the hospital the day after my surgery, it made me ill. On day three after I got home I tried again with serious heartburn after 2 or 3 sips. I'm supposed to get in as much as I can right now, they know it won't be all I need immediately, but I also think I am going to switch to the more fruity type, like nectar or whatever its called.....I have a feeling those will sit easier with me than the Protein Shakes. I tried them before surgery as well and just couldn't dig the choclate, vanilla, or strawberry shakes. Maybe I'm weird.

I'm 5 days post op. I've been trying to take in liquid as much as I can. Unfortunately I'm not at the intake that the nut said I should be. I use Med cups and I know it isnt much ( being 1 Med cup is 1 oz).. but I use the clear Protein and take in 4-5 oz of protein a day since I've been home. ( which was 3/15.. 2 days post op). Again not much since whole bottle is 30 grams of protein but at least it's something.

I started at week 2. I drank the Atkins chocolate and caramel cafe shakes. I still drink them actually. It's true that it is very hard to get all the Protein in at first. In fact I did not even come close at first but I did start drinking these in week 2.

I was sleeved 3/13 and had 1 full Atkins shake over a 24 hour period on Thursday. I also have the concentrated Liquid Protein shots that I mix with Powerade. Yesterday I was able to get in 60gm of Protein for the first time. It was tough!!! I'm sure I won't be able to do it today!

I was drinking Protein whey shots (30g) that come in a tube in the hospital. They were tolerable. My Dr. said protein is a MUST, and I have been drinking Premier Protein (30g) or EAS (17g) 1-2 a day from day 3. My goal is to get 70-100g of protein in daily, and I do 95% of the time :). You can always ask your Dr. again if you have any questions. Just like we are all different on here, so is some of the Dr. advice...

My doc said that Protein is a must after week two. Until then I am to concentrate on Clear Liquids only. There is a protein clear liquid that I could get from their office but I was told it really wasn't necessary the first two weeks.

I started my Protein Drink the day I was released from the hospital. I wasn't able to get much in, but it did count towards my Fluid intake. ;)

3days out I had outpatient gastric sleeve. I’m now in hospital BP220/100 would you believe not one thing I can drink here except Water for days nothing but plain water! O calories the stomach pain from hunger alone is debilitating! Hopefully my family get here tomorrow with some Protein water. They did give me clear broth which had less than 5 calories. I was hoping someone tried a pro shake early I’m getting desperate.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
