Has anyone ever had gallstones go away without intervention?

I've been preparing for getting banded. 18 years ago an ultrasound showed that I had 3 gallstones. The ultrasound I had last week showed no gallstones. Can they go away by themselves? Has anyone ever had gallstones go away without intervention? Not that I'm complaining... just wondering.:(

    From what I learned when I had my gallbladder removed - gallstones can and do eventually break down into 'sludge' - I was only 24 years old and I had sludge - no stones....so yep they 'can' appear to be gone this way
