Fluid Choices For Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery Healing...

Recommended Posts

I would just pick up a few and not stock up. What works for one person will not work for the other. I can assure you.

It wasn't a vomit type reaction for me. Some things can taste terrible and not induce vomiting. At least for me. The Protein shakes I loved pre-surgery tasted awful post, so you are just going to have to see what works for you when you get on the other side. Don't worry. You will be mobile and able to go to the store and carry on life as normal. You can do this.

It may not make you throw up, but things may taste different to you. It seems like our taste changes, and sometimes we are more sensitive to tastes and smells. Some people say they can't drink the Protein Drinks just because the smell alone can make them nauseous. Sometimes it's the actual texture that may make a person nauseous. But then sometimes a little further post op, they may be able to try again and be able to drink it. It affects us all differently.

Don't be scared, I know it seems overwhelming but you CAN do this!! If I can do it, anyone can. Just try not to get stressed over things. Buy a few things, or order some samples so you don't have a lot of money in these things then try them post-op and if you still like them, order more. I only used Protein drinks for a short while post-op, and then it was the ready to drink kind. I only liked one kind, the Atkins vanilla. As soon as I could eat more foods/solids, I got my protein from food. It was challenging at first until I could eat a little more and to figure out what foods have the most protein. The main thing is to try to get your fluids in and stay hydrated. It's all an adjustment, but gets easier over time. You have this forum for support when you have problems or questions.

Most people call Isopure Isopuke. Most people hate it.

It never bothered me. It's not anything I would choose to drink. It does have a lot of Protein in it for the beginning clear stage. I didn't have any trouble getting it down, and I didn't hate it, but I really didn't like it either.

It's not that these things make people vomit so much. They say after surgery Protein drinks just gross them out. These could even be protein drinks they loved before surgery.

I would get the syntrex nectar sample packets. You will get to try all the flavors and nectar is very popular with most people. Have you looked in the food section at the places to get samples? Also, I have heard that GNC will let people try Isopure.< /p>

i don't have a lot of options for shopping where i live (that i know of right now). i would probably have to buy things off the internet. it seems like our health food & supplement stores carry their own weird brands and not much of anything else.

darn it though! those isopuke drinks look so REFRESHING! haha. i'm a sucker for advertising i guess.

i will look on the syntrex. i might get an order of each thing and deal with them one pack at a time then get more of what i like before i run out. i don't suppose a bombshelter worth of a drink im going to end up grossing out over is a good idea. i just would feel so much better having myself stocked and ready.

No, I don't think you will have to do this for the rest of your life. This is just until you can get into the full swing of things and back to a diet of 'normal' foods. But this will be different for each person. I am very active and will most likely use Protein drinks for workouts and Meal Replacements, but that will be by my choice, not because I cannot get what I need through regular foods.

A quick google search in Saskatoon for health food stores turned up quite a few:

i know how to google stuff... i hate when people use that 'let me google that for you, now was that so hard' thing... it's so condescending.

i know all of those stores. (except the Protein one) i said we don't carry all the exotic brands i have to order them online.

nvm.

No you didn't.

Yes, you are right. It is condescending. I hate it when people can't take a few seconds to figure something out for themselves. You said you don't have a lot of options for shopping there. Yes you do. You don't need exotic Protein drinks and you don't need excuses.

We've all found ways to sabotage our diets in the past. Let's not continue this behavior, what do you say?

Sorry, I'm pretty blunt and call it like I see it. Some people may not like it, but this is serious stuff we're dealing with here.

She asked if anyone tasted Isopure . for some reason, I can't see the post anymore , just the pictures of the Isopure. I don't think that is really sabotaging anything.

Getting the Syntrex Sample set gives a wide variety of flavors to choose from for a very cheap price.

The sabotage comes from making excuses to not put some effort into doing what we need to do. We have all seen the posts from those who say they can't drink the Protein shakes but admit they haven't tried any variety. If one doesn't work, you shouldn't throw your hands in the air and say, "Protein Shakes don't work for me" like we see posted on a daily basis. I think we have all made a commitment to change in going through with this. I just hate to see someone sell themselves short by not putting in the smallest effort to find what works for them. That, to me, is sabotage.

holy crap dude you need to chill.

im not putting in any work and self sabotaging, because you used a rude google programme to find six or seven stores in my area that might sell Protein drinks? you don't think i don't already know where they are and have been there, since I stated earlier they don't sell the products i want to try, so i have to order them online? jeesh. talk about a major MAJOR over reaction. i hope you were just having a bad day or maybe have issues with people buying Protein drinks online for you to freak out like that. that was a nasty attack you pulled on me lol. kinda weird actually. offputting.

you are right that's what i asked. i was curious because i was planning to order a large amount for after surgery, unless i could get some other ideas on things that might taste better. we have health food stores where i live but they don't carry all the brands you can find online. i wanted to have a wide variety of Protein drinks for after surgery, in case i didn't feel up to shopping after, or i end up not liking one or the other. nothing like being prepared right?

in no way was i sabotaging myself, not doing any work, or any of the other rude things the poster implied i was doing. honestly it was just a question lol. i'm still blown away about this and just disappointed so much at this board. i thought it was for support not baseless paranoid accusations.

and thank you i have ordered syntrex too, it was suggested to me on the OH board.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
