How Soon Did You Start Working Out After Gastric Sleeve Surgery, Other Questions

Recommended Posts

Me personally didn't start doing hardcore workouts until 4 months out. Not sure why, I was tired a lot and never felt like doing them. I started to get a little depressive like, because I'd been working out for eons before my surgery - since I was a teenager. I had that down pat, just never was able to get my food intake in order. What I did do right out of surgery was just some walking outside or on the treadmill. I began to realize this was not quite enough.

When I finally started to get back into my routines, I started a little slow. I did about 30 on my elliptical or 30 on my stationary bike. I started bumping it up pretty quickly because I did notice the more I'd workout the better I felt physically. My moods lifted and within I'd say about 6 weeks beyond getting my workout groove back I was full steam ahead. I was doing about 90 minutes workouts per day. It was around this time I started the Couch to 5K program too. I also do the Callanetics (google it) and some DVD's such as Billy Blanks, Leslie Sansone or Jillian Micheals. Those are all fun.

It's just for me a matter of finding something I enjoy. I enjoy most of all workouts so that wasn't hard for me to do. On the machines I just plug in my MP3 player with all my favorite songs and before I know it an hour has passed. :)

I'm 4 weeks today and have been walking about 3-3.5 miles in an hour for the past three weeks....so I figured I was ready to get back to zumba tonight. I was surprised how sore I started to get at about the 50 minute mark. I just took it very slow and easy the last ten minutes....but it felt great to be really moving again. The hardest part was not chugging my Water after class!

Thank you so much for your input Diva :) I think I will just start with treadmill walking for about 30 minutes and some bike, then I will move to the elliptical when I feel like I can do more :) I will goggle the DVD's :) Thanks!

Zumba is awesome. I did it before surgery. Is a lot of movement too. I am having a hard time sipping slowly with my liquids lol :)

I have a Wii system. I love to do the Just Dance games. They are great. Before I got sick and down this year, I did one month of 45-60 min. X 5 days a week and lost 20 lbs. I also have the Gold's Gym Dance Workout. You can buy the Zumba. I have it on my wish list. My workouts are really limited right now because of knee, hip and shoulder injuries I got back in august. The good news is though, I am on steroid therapy now and it is responding marvelously! I am hoping by the time my surgery is here in Feb., I will be healing very nicely and can get my grove back on...lol.

I'm 8 days out now and plan to start land based workouts in two weeks. I still do not understand about not chugging Water.

Will someone PLEASE explain it so it makes sense to me not to drink when I'm thirsty? Will drinking more than a 'sip' (and I may actually throttle the next person who says that word to me) damage the sleeve?

I mostly can swallow larger than a sip without pain or reflux. So does that mean somethings wrong with my sleeve?

Thanks

I was sleeved on Nov. 3rd, and started lifting lightly about 3 1/2 weeks post op. I've built that up slowly since and just started giving a bit of effort in the weight room this week. All is well so far for me. But I would surely go with your doctor's recommendation. He knows exactly what you've had done. Better safe than sorry. But those for couple weeks after surgery were frustrating because all I wanted to do was get back to lifting, but wasn't allowed yet.

ive been doing some sort of exercise since 3 days post op. mainly the first week i was just walking, by week two i was in the gym lifting weights, by week 3 i was doing zumba and tomorrow ill be 4 weeks post.. I actually found out that I wasn't supposed to be goin that hard this early, but i made sure to listen to my body if something hurt i stopped doing it.. lol..

Today is the first day i was able to sneeze and not have my incision hurt so i think im doin ok. Also i think it helps that since ive always been an athlete i have a better idea of the limits i can push on my body..

I say if your doctor ok's you then go for it, just keep in mind that you had a major surgery and listen to what your body tells you.

im almost 3 weeks out, i went back to the gym last week, my drain incision still hurts when jiggled too much so i have been brisk walking on the treadmill for a half hour or doing the elliptical, i started doing Water aroboics today, felt great but really tired afterward. Ive also been doing the arm circuit, my arms are really big and im afraid of all the loose skin and bat wings, so im starting the arm toning. Cant wait till my drain incision heals up so i can go to boot camp. It is offered 3 times a week at my gym.

I started walking 1/2 mile 3 days postoperative and increased distance and speed each day. Did an 8k run/ walk event at 2.5 weeks with my best walking AV time at that time. .15:16 per mile. I have continued power walking since then (8/17) and have continued walking regularly and have now walked 223 miles. Last walk was 2 days ago and covered 10.2 miles. . Avignon. 14:17 min/mile. Exercise is important to my weight loss. Started upper body at about 2 months.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
