Almost To Tears! Had Gastric Sleeve Surgery And Hungry All The Time!

Recommended Posts

OK so I was sleeved on Oct 20th, 2011 and I'm down 36lbs. but for the past couple weeks I am hovering around 240. Some days I'm down 0.2 pounds then some days i'm up 0.6 pounds! How can you gain weight eating 500 calories a day? The weight loss was great the first month now I feel like I'm going no where. I'm hungry ALL the time if I eat I'm hungry 1.5 hrs later. All I eat is Protein I am so sick of chicken, and beef etc... I don't have any room for veggies. I usually have less than 50g of carbs my dr. reccomends less than 100g. Tonight for dinner I ahd 4 shrimp. I don't take a ppi the dr says I don't need one. I hate to think I've done all this and paid all this money for 36lbs! I still have 70lbs to go and starting to feel like I am never going to get there. Sorry to vent but I just needed somone to listen for a min.

My sleeve date is the 14th, but it sounds like you may need some variety in your diet. Does your doctor have a dietician in the office? I bought a great cookbook called Weight Loss Surgery recipes for Dummies on Amazon and there are several other cookbooks on Amazon that give some great recipes for you after weight loss surgery that will give you the Protein you need to continue losing. Just a thought! CXongrats on your success so far!

ab, even if your doc is saying that you don't need a PPI, it sounds to me like you DO need one. Try taking a couple of tums for a few days and see if the "hunger" doesn't decrease dramatically. Once I started taking Tums (on doc's advice), my "hunger" disappeared unless it had been several hours since I had eaten.

Increase your Water and Protein intake to the recommended levels (64 oz of Water, 70g of protein) and up your calorie intake at least to 800 calories a day. Your body may well be in starvation mode. I know some don't believe that exists, but I do believe. Those three things may be what you need to break that stall.

I got stuck just under 300 pounds and was getting frustrated. My regular doc suggested I back off my exercise just a bit and that helped. Sometimes the key to breaking a stall is simply shaking things up. At 500 calories, your body probably thinks it needs to hoard every calorie for future needs. Once you add in a little more fuel, it may think that it's okay to burn some of those pounds off.

I know I ramble, but I hate to see someone so frustrated. You will start losing again and it will be a big whoosh! Try to stay positive and on track and start looking for the NSVs. Are your clothes bigger? Can you walk farther? Those things are just as important as the number on the scale, possibly MORE important.

Good luck!! :)

I was sleeved on Oct 27th and have lost 21 lbs since surgery. 33 lbs altogether counting the preop diet. I started off great too and for the last few weeks have only lost a pound a week or so. Same as you up and down a half or quarter. It is frustrating. I feel like I'm eating a variety of foods good on my Protein, not as good on the fruits and veggies either and get most of my Water in. I think it is just a 5 week stall and it will break soon. Are you exercising? I have been at the gym 3-5 times per week since week 2. I feel your pain and think the same did I do this to only lose 30 lbs? I think we just need to keep on pushing thru and things will work out. I mean look at ALL these people on this site that have lost SO much weight. I don't think we are any different than them and we too will make our goals. Keep your chin up and push forward! Take care, Beth

AB...Indeed it's frustrating. When I was "banded" and frustrated, I'd pop in some relaxing or upbeat music. I would have preferred to have popped in a funny movie, but I was in so much pain I couldn't physically laugh...Lol.

Try not to put all this pressure on yourself.

Stress hinders your healing...Nurse yourself...Keep talking about what's going on...It's Healthy...rose.gif

I think you should try a ppi. You don't need a prescription, try it for a couple weeks and if it doesn't change anything then you know your Dr was right. If it does help then problem fixed. either way it's a win/win.

I use a PPI and I am hungry regularly. Every 1 1/2 -2 hours like clock work.

I am meeting all my protien and staying under on carbs . Drinking all my Water etc.

The scale isn't moving this last week for me though I feel smaller.

I am thinking positive and thinking I am losing inches instead of pounds.

I have to say I feel the same about "did I do this just to lose 25" pounds in my case.

How can we eat such few calories and NOT lose weight???

Julie

I think Lissa gave some GREAT advice! Change things up, it can't hurt.

A ppi is a proton pump inhibitor. ( Prilosec or nexium etc) to reduce stomach acid.

I read the easiest way to get your fruit and veggies is through a monster smoothie. Hand full of spinach, strawberries, banana and blueberries, scoop Protein and scoop of Peanut Butter. Little bit of juice to make it liquify able and you got all your veggie/fruit for the day in 1 8z shot. Give it a shot and see if that helps you.

Good luck.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
