How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

I too have stalled for quite a few weeks and worried that maybe this won't work for me. I still haven't had a filled but get my first thursday. Hopefully that will jump start me. I was banded june 1 2007 and have lost 40 so far. I go to the gym 5 days a week. Plus try to do some other excerise on the weekends.

I have Aetna and it took me 4 months. I had to do 3 months worth of visits before I fulfilled the requirements. I lived in Clearwater until 2000. Who is doing your surgery? I was a RN and worked at Largo Medical Center for about 8 years and then as a rent a nurse for a while. Good luck. I am 59

Hi Cathie,

I am 50 years old. I also have Cigna insurance. I have had 6 monthly vistits with my family doctor to document nutrition/exercise (I had to go every 30 days). I had the nutrition class, and just had the psych evaluation last week, every thing should be complete. Just waiting for everything to be submitted to Cigna. I am a RN also. I work in a women's correctional center. Good luck to you.

they must do it different here as I to had my nutrition class, seminar, and psch evaluation and now they are submitting the info to cigna. I sure hope I don't have to wait another 6 months. That would really depress me. Where do you live Dixie? Your job sounds interesting. I work for Pubix Supermarkets here in Florida. Thanks for your reply

Good morning all.....I am new to all this and have been reading your comments for about a month now. You all have been a tremendous help to me and very informative. I received my banding date and it will be on October 29, by Dr. Geiss on LI. I am so excited as I feel this is a renewed lease on life for me. I know it's been addressed before (somewhere in this tread) but i can't seem to find it...I need to know what to bring with me to the hospital. I remember seeing things like pillows, etc....and would love if you could tell me one more time. Congratulations to all of you and I applaud your jobs well done. I only hope I have as much success as you have had. Thanks again for all your help.

Welcome notmzperfect, and congrats on you upcoming surgery date.

I just had my pre op appt with my doctor a couple of days ago so I can tell you everything that they asked me to bring to the hospital.

Meds that I take daily.

CPAP machine if I use one

They told me that if I wanted to bring my own pajama's, to not bring 2 piece set because the waistband might rub against the bandages. Nightgown works best.

Robe

rubber soled slippers (they will make me get up and walk after surgery)

loose fitting outfit to wear home.

lapband notebook from the doctor. :D

and to leave all jewelry at home

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Mary:D

notmzperfect - I just wore a mumu housedress that came half way between the floor and my knee, no undies and slip on shoes. It worked well for me. I know I wasn't beautiful, but didn't care. Post surgery I only had to lift my arms into the sleeves and slip on my shoes and I was good to go. Nothing rubbed on the incisons this way.

Good luck with your journey, this is part of the continuing weight loss/maintenance journey that you have already been on, the band isn't the "answer" to all the issues you will face, but it sure has helped me to face some emotional stuff that I never would have.

Welcome! I didn't go to the hospital. I had day surgery and was home in 3 hours, so I can't help you with your question. I wish you much success and an easy recovery though.

I got a new fill today. I am excited that it doesn't seem to be leaking out.

I don't know why last time I got a fill and ended up with no fill. People have said he may have not been in the port right, and I hope that's the case and not a leak.

Hey Southern gal---I too am in the early planning stages and am also new to this post site but I love it. Can anyone tell me how long this takes if you are not self-pay? I started my LB journey August 17 and done the psych and nutrionist and all the paper work but am waiting for approval from my insurance co. Anyone else have Cigna? I'm jealous that most of you are already banded. I'm 57 and my Doc won't do it if you are over 60. I live in Clearwater, FL

Cathie

5/31 visit w/surgeon - had tons of pre-op visits - sleep, stress (3 visits to heart dr - failed treadmill had to have a nuclear stress tes) lungs, colon, pap, mamo, shrink and by end of June had my 7/17 date. I have Blue Cross CA and they were great - approved me after they got the shrink results..

Good Luck - This is a GREAT place for info ....

Indiogirl---Thanks for your reply. So far all I've had to do is fill out paper work and have a nutro and psych eval. Get a letter from my pcp and that's it. I'm supposedly waiting for approval now. Pray for me please. I want this so badly. I read alot of your posts and you always are so knowlegable about everything. Very helpful to every one. I hope it works for me as well as it seems to be working for you. I'm watching my diet now and also working out at the gym 4 to 5 times a week just to get into the habit. I've been a slug for awhile. I have about the same amount to lose as you did according to your ticker. This is a great site. I think I've read every post thats on it. Thank you so much for answering.

I am so tight, I can only sip Water. I hope this fill loosens up some so I can keep it. I am sipping hot tea right now, but I feel like I ate way too many dinners. I better lose weight now!

I may have to go in and get a tiny bit taken out. I don't want to though, because I don't want him messing with my port again. Now I am afraid of

the tubing getting poked.

But if I stay this tight, I will have to get some out.

Am glad to see how well you are doing. Being diabetic myself, I'm interested in how you are doing with your medications. I'm on a variety of meds an am curious if you reduced or got off any of your meds. My surgery is this Friday, 21 Sept and am so looking forward to becoming much healthier.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
