How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

I am new on here, someone please tell me what pb means? Peanut Butter? ?

Oh, I wish! No, it's a "productive burp" or "productive belch." Check this out: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=7959

Cblancha9: If you can muster what it takes to lose the weight on your own, I'd advise you to do it that way.

I am not sorry that I got the band. But it is not easy - it does help, but you do have to use the same kind of disipline to stick with healthier eating that you're using now.

It is very easy to sabbotage the band. You can eat chocolate and ice cream and chips. In fact, they go down much easier than good wholesome meat, vegetables and fruit. So that's the problem that I and many others are dealing with.

I became so restricted that I haven't been able to eat enough food to keep me from being hungry most of the time and I have discovered that eating ice cream and chocolate feels good (just like pre-band) and I've stopped losing weight. Before I got the band, I couldn't understand why anyone would sabbotage their band. Now I get it, unfortunately.

I will tell you that I am not able to do the kind of exercise that would probably have kept me on the losing bandwagon. So that's another consideration you should think about. If you're healthy enough to be able to pour on the exercise, the band may be the right answer for you.

Whatever your decision, I wish you the very best success!

Hello Everyone, I've just been reading posts, :typing: seems like we are all going through about the same thing. We are so excided to have this band done, then we have some weight lose, then come to a stand still. For some of us this can be a couple of months :think , thats me. I went for my 3rd fill yesterday. The NP did a wonderful job with that needle. I have 1.8cc now, she said they usually put in .2 or .3cc from now on. So to all of us in this postion, I hope we finally hit that "sweet spot" Bonnie

I started on a diet of my own of 2 Protein Shakes and 1 meal and have lost 11 lbs this week. I have about 150 lbs. to lose. I figure the more I can lose now the closer to my goal I'll be.

Good attitude Cblancha9!

Well, I'm officially in bandland...had the surgery yesterday. I feel great today and if my port weren't sore, would be up and running around! My hospital was wonderful. I was an out-patient and had to be there at 7. Got there shortly before that (after getting up at 4 and hitting the road at 4:45!), was taken in to a room w/ the hubbling and then about an hour later was taken in to the pre-op area. I'd say the surgery started around 8:30 and DH said the doc came out and talked to him at 9:30 and said all went well. I stayed in recovery until about 11:30 and we were back on the road and headed home by noon! I didn't need any pain medicine until right before I left and then didn't take any more until right before I went to bed at midnight. Woke up at 3:00 hurting and got up to take more...decided to sleep in my lounger after that because we have a platform bed and it's a little low and a little difficult to get out of. But then I slept thru until my doc's office called at 8. I was fortunate and didn't have much of a preop diet - just the day before - and I only have to do today, then I'll start on the full liquid diet for 2 weeks. Hopefully that won't be too bad (I cheated this a.m. and put some Coffeemate in my coffee, but will behave the rest of the day...I hope!). I'm looking forward to that first 'real' meal, but know my stomach will be shrunk enough that I won't be likely to overdo it. I'm a librarian at a small college and our new school year starts 97 days from yesterday. I have a 'new' dress, size 16 that I bought a few years ago and have never been able to wear, so that's my motivation for the summer. The doc said I could start back exercising mid June. Hopefully by then we'll have all the algae out of our pool and I can enjoy the summer!!

Thanks for all your prayers and positive thoughts. This forum has been a great help in my journey so far and I'm sure will continue to help me over the rough spots!

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering what a resting metabolic rate was and how they measure it. So Denise822 could you enlighten me and tell me how yours went?

Best wishes,

Michelle

Good luck, CBlancha9! I'm about to join the slow losers club. Getting really frustrated. I keep going back and forth with the same 2 pounds for the last month! I would really like to know more about the metabolic resting test. I asked my doctor about that and he said I shouldn't get it until I'm at my goal weight. Doesn't make sense to me.

Hi all, I decided that I would not even start at the junk food, or chocolate. No one ever liked that stuff more than me! I had Lap Band surgery done 3 weeks ago, and I have lost 30 pounds, and went from a size 2x to a medium, or size 13!!!!!!!!

I refuse to start with any junk, cause I know I would not be able to stop!! I am some days getting quite hungry, I get a fill in 2 weeks, but, I did not go through all of this to gain it back!!

Some of you that are discouraged, keep trying!! Dont give up!!!! We are all in this together!!!

  Margi - Wow! What a loss, good for you! I am steering away from sweets and gooey treats for my health, but I think a bite or two once in a while is more realistic for me.

:hungry: What power I feel when I eat something "sweet" and "desserty" and have two or three bites - chewing....chewing....chewing. I don't miss ice cream because I make my own Protein Shakes with soy, EAS powder and fruit, or whatever recipe I dream up. Cold and creamy - yum. And it is good for me.....

To all of you who remember I was discouraged about my slow weight loss, I have kicked up my cardio to 5 days a week for 45 minutes, whew and tracked calories, Protein etc. Following all the bandster rules. I keep reminding myself - This is a 2 year process and I have a lot of retraining to do.

We all deserve a healthy life!

Hugs,

Michelle

Hi you both, thanks for your comments. Here is mostly what I eat:

Breakfast I usually have a small bowl of oatmeal

lots of Water between meals

lunch I have about a half cup of chicken with light mayo, cottage cheese, and a half cup of green Beans with cheese on it, melted

supper I usually have the chicken again, or bean Soup, and more cottage cheese, and a half cup of mashed potato with light butter, and light sour cream.

after that I have my cup of Protein Drink, and at night I have about 4 saltine crackers with Peanut Butter. For me. eating a lot of Protein works. Sometimes instead of oatmeal, I will have 2 scrambled eggs, with light melted cheese on it.

I do exercise every day for only 10 minutes, but I walk a lot every day, well, not really a Lot, lot but a few blocks, I am getting to walk more every day.

The best thing for my weight loss is my attitude, that I refuse for this not to work, and I get that from all of yous!!

i hope I can be of help to someone else. I only weigh once a week, but, I usually lose more inches anyway than pounds. So, I just go by my clothes.

You guys are fantastic for my attitude, all of yous keep up the good work, and if you dont lose for a while, WAIT, and keep going, it will happen, isnt that why we did this in the first place!!

Drink, drink, drink the water!!!!

With the resting metobolic test they put something like a close

pin on my nose. Then thet put a tube in my mouth to breathe in

and out of for about 20 min. It tells you how many calories you

burn just sitting there. It was hard because I felt like I was

choking. It told me that in order to lose weight, I have to eat

1,000 calories per day.

Denise822 - that sounds kinda grewsome (sp?)! But at least you know. How tall are you? Did they predict how quickly you would lose on 1000 cal per day? I have always know calories in? - calories out?

you might try this too, although i guess you'd need to stick to what they say. i put in my existing weight and got 1573 cals. when i put in my desired weight, i got 1198. see how it compares to what they told you.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
