Would you sleeve again?

Recommended Posts

I have no regrets and would do it again in a hearbeat. I have had zero complications. No nausea, no dizziness, no food introduction troubles, absolutely nothing. I am 3 months out right now at 60lbs down! I am extremely pleased with my decision and the flexibility the sleeve has given me as far as leading a normal life and not being restricted in my food choices. I haven't had any regrets and would 100% recommend this surgery to anyone who inquired!

I would do it again right now on a moments notice... I had no issues, I ate like i was told, went back to work in 5 days and have reccommended atleast 5 people to my doctor in the 3 months since i had my surgery.. I am now down about 50 lbs and 3 sizes in jeans and 2 sizes in shirts and I love my sleeve it makes me normal, when i sit down to eat. I dont have to finish every meal and also eat the left overs from my wifes plate... Most of the time she is picking at my plate left overs now.... I love it, it may have been the best decision of my life except for my marriage and my children..... Good luck!

In 20 years I'll be 70. Any complications from this surgery will probably be the LEAST of my problems by then!

The staples they use are Titanium, they will not be affected by the MRI.

As for the issues we might have in 4, 10 or 20 years? Well, we just all hope for the best. Know one can know for sure, but there have been lots of cases of stomach cancer, etc where patients had this much of their stomach removed and have done very well. Those are the only real long-term examples we can look at. I am sure if you did a search on google, you could find out some info on those kinds of cases. Remember, hindsight's 20/20. In 20 years, we might be regretting this. Maybe not, though!wink.gif On the other hand, if we didn't have this surgery, we might just be 6 feet under in 10 or 20 years. I like my chances with the surgery!

Yes I would do it again! I went through a couple of weeks (before I could eat real food) of beating myself up for not being able to do it on my own without surgery, but once I could eat more normally I got over that real quick. The 34 lbs lost and being able to shop in the regular department now (no more plus size) has helped too.

As for depression...what's that? I was on 450mg of Wellbutrin before my surgery. I took it the day before surgery and have not taken it since. I'm also off my hormone therapy and my blood pressure meds. The only medicine I take now is the Prevacid which I understand is temporary. When I get a headache 4 baby aspirin knock it out.

I'm absolutely GIDDY!!

I am 5 weeks out and I would do it again tomorrow! There is a period of a few weeks after surgery that I was like, hmmm, should I have done this? I discovered it was coming from my emotional relationship with food. I still had head hunger and was going through a depression because I was on liquids and couldnt eat solids. I felt sad that I couldnt eat like I used to. Then I just snapped out of it! If I was going to continue to eat like that, I was going to an early grave! Now that I am on solids, I can eat small portions of anything I choose! I am very picky now because I want to only taste the best! If I only have a few bites, I choose them carefully. What is going to make me feel good? Protein. I think like that now. I have lost 27 pounds in 5 weeks and I am looking and feeling better for sure. I dont regret it at all. I think people dont realize that they have such an emotional attachment to food and get a little depressed when they have to face their unhealthy relationship with food because they dont have a choice now. It forced me to look at food differently and thank goodness! Good luck with your decision!

I have no regrets. I had an easy recovery - one night in the hospital and then the rest at home. My only side effects since surgery are mild anemia (which I have had most of my life) and reflux (which I had prior to surgery for years). I did go through puberty hell for a couple of months due to the estrogen from the stored fat cells being dumped into my bloodstream - but that is over. That isn't a side effect of the sleeve - it is a side effect of rapid weight loss (no matter how you are losing it).

I have no buyers remorse from having a body part removed. I have previously lost my gallbladder, bone spurs on my feet and all my reproductive parts. Part of my stomach didn't phase me at all.

The reason I did the sleeve (with 118 pounds to lose) was to keep it off - not to lose it. I am a champion weight loser! This is the 5th time I have lost approximately 100 pounds. (see the thread on all the diets we have been on) I think this is my only chance to KEEP it off.

You ask about being worried on long term results. The five year studies are fine - no bad results there. People have been living with gastrectomies for many years - lots longer than five - patients who had most of their stomach taken out because of some medical problem.

I think my chances of living past 60 (I'm 54 1/2 now) are much better with the sleeve than without. And whatever time I get to stay here prior to starting the afterlife, I expect I will be healthier and happier.

In summary - no regrets!

I had a major complication of internal bleeding, bp dropped to 40/10 and I was in ICU for a couple of days. For probably the first 6 weeks I had serious buyers remorse and couldn't believe I had done this just to lose weight. But as I started to feel better and the weight started coming off I made peace with myself. Now 11 weeks later and 50 lbs. down I am soooooo glad I had the surgery. Getting back to work helped because I don't have all day to just think about myself and my surgery. Hang in there and give yourself some time. Things will get better.

In an instant.

For me, there was only one place I was going without this surgery and it wasn't going to end well.

SKcunningham - Like you I am a champion weight loser. I've lost the same 50+ lbs several times. About 8 yrs ago I lost 125 lbs for about a minute. The reason I am considering the sleeve is for the keeping the weight off FOREVER! I just don't want to continue yo-yo dieting the rest of my life. I know with the sleeve you have to pay close attention to what you eat & drink, but I do that now & overweight, would rather do it and be think.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm so sorry you had all those complications. Do you mind me asking if you had any health issues prior to surgery? Do you have any idea what caused your complications?

I'm so glad your feeling better now.

I had no health problems prior to surgery just overweight. None at all. The dr said he thought a small blood vessel didn't cauterize completely and opened up. I had surgery on Friday, went home saturday about noon and about 2 hours later my legs couldn't support me so we went back to the ER where I was admitted and promptly passed out cuz my pressure dropped so low. He didn't want to go back to surgery unless he had to and fortunately my bp started coming up, hr coming down and bloodwork stabilized. So he knew rhe bleeding had stopped. I was really anemic and had to take Iron for several weeks but now I feel great. Even with this problem I would still do it over in a heartbeat. Even if I didn't lose another lb it would be worth it knowing I will not regain what I've lost.

I too had internal bleeding and had to have two bags of blood put back in the old veins. I was in the hospital for 5 days instead of a day and 1/2. I was low on oxygen and had the beginings of pnemonia and had to be on a nebulizer for three days. All that being said, like most, I have lost the same 70-100 lbs too many times to count in my life time. I know how to eat healthy, and can do it, but this much ((())) is a healthy portion and this ((((((((((((((())))))))))))))) is not. So doesn't matter how healthy your food is if you can't help but eat way too much of it. I have not lost a lot of weight since the surgery and actually gained when I tried to quit smoking ... yet again. But what I did lose and this is the biggest reason for me doing this is 20 pills to 3 pills a day for all my different co-morbidities. My blood pressue is controlled, my diabeties is in remission, my cholesterol is almost normal and my triglycerides are under control. Would I do it again? Yes. Simply, yes. I hope I didn't scare you but the reality is that there are possibilities for complications, but do those complications out weigh the benefits in the end is what you have to ask your self and make that oh so very personal decision. Do all of your homework, all of your research, and not just about the sleeve, but of other possible solutions. You stated you have no health issues right now (thank goodness) but look at your family tree, are the issues there? Will you be another branch that contracts those issues later on in life? I am 44 and was hunky dory till I was 30, and that is when everything for me surfaced. Good luck on your decision. I wish you all the best.

I agree with Raine, any surgery has the risk of this particular complication. I'm 50 and never had a weight problem in my younger years, but over the last 20 years I have lost so many times only to regain. I too was a volume eater. I have a husband and 3 sons that I could match bite for bite. Lol. I wanted the restriction of the sleeve, something to tell me when to stop and believe me it does that. Just take your time making your decision and do what you feel is right for you. Good luck with your journey where ever it may lead you. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
