Hello to everyone, thank you for taking the time to read over this and offer any advice. Both me and my wife will be having the sleeve at the end of September and beginning of October respectively. I am not as worried about my wife's recovery since she can have how ever much time she needs off from work. I am a little worried about my situation with my job. I am a machinist for an oilfield supply company. I work nights so its not nearly as hot as it its during the day. My shop is seperated by a wall, and on the other side of the wall is a 1700 degree furnace. The heat radiates to our area. I have talked to only a couple of people and got mixed opinions. I was told that after the procedure it is normal to get dehydrated easily. Have any of you had this problem? I will have the procedure on a Thursday and I will return to work on the following Wednesday. I will be working in our lab for the remainder of that week and then the following week will return to the shop. To those of you who have had the procedure, what was your recovery time like?

Hi Firefighter-

Yay for you and your wife going on this adventure together! As for your questions, I was only off work for 6 days but I work in an office. I won't lie those first few days were really rough. I was VERY tired and weak. I actually took a half day on my third day back just to rest.

I had very little swelling and was able to eat and drink much easier than others so I never had to worry about dehydration.

No one really knows how they will handle surgery but assuming you do well, my suggestion would be bringing lots of Water to work and constant sipping. I am assuming you cannot take more time off as that would be my first suggestion in such a taxing profession.

I was feeling much better when I started soft foods in the second week. Best of luck to you and your wife!

Amanda

Be prepared to sleep whenever you can the first month. Rest is part of the healing. Drink pleny of Water and take your Vitamins faithfully. Even if you feel good, don't Ignore the lifting restriction. Ask for help- say it's the back or a pulled stomach muscle. I don't know if you are planning on telling co-workers. You are going to love the new you after healing!

I found it very difficult to get in more than 34-36 ounces of Water or any fluids for the first few months. I am a stay home mom of three and I had a 18month old when i had surgery. Other than lifting her or my 3 year old son I went back to doing everything including cleaning tubs and showers at about 1 week out. I was cooking for my family at about 5 days out. Keep us posted on how your doing! Good luck to you and your wife.

my doc told me to get a little med cup from the pharmacy. take a gallon of Water with you wherever you go. fill the little med cup up and sip on that. finish one of them every ten minutes, and then fill it again. if you sip on one of those every ten minutes for 12 hours you will have drank one gallon of water in that time and you wont get dehydrated. he made sure to tell me not to take it like a shot but sip from the med cup.

my surgery was on the 16th and i could go back to work tomarrow if i wanted to. but we all handle recovery differently. it also depends on how many incisions, if you have a drain or not and so on and so forth. most people have been taking one week off from work though and been fine with that. good luck on your surgery and keep us posted on how it goes. congrats on starting your new lives together. i think you guys will have an advantage over others because you both will be there for eachother and both know what your going through together. its hard to explain what you are going through to people that havent gone through it.

Have you talked to your surgeon? Be sure to let him know your specific situation and the need to stay hydrated. Good luck to both of you!

I work in an office but I was back to work in a week. I walk a lot in the evenings though and dehyfration was an issue the first couple times I did it as I walk 3 miles. I learned though that if I drink more Water during the day and then have a G2 gatorade when I get home, the sweats and dizziness aren't so bad. I would advise buying one of those big plastice mugs that have the ice cude tube down the middle and keep sipping all day. Pay attention to how you are feeling and if you start to get lightheaded or sweating more than normal, keep some G2 around and switch to that for one bottle then go back to the water. If that doesn't help make sure you call your doc and he may send you in for some IV fluids to help boost you back to where you should be.

Know that most of the replies you just got were from Women. They seem to have a little more of an issue drinking large amouts of fluids after the surgery in general. I as a male found it to be really easy to get down all 64 oz. of Fluid every day and I went back to work in 6 days...

Good luck and try to post you questions in the Man Room section for a more male perspective if needed.....

I felt bad the first week. No energy and dehydrated. Second week wasn't as bad, but still didn't feel like I could have returned to the temperature extremes you are describing. All I can tell you is drink, drink, and drink some more. Good Luck to you and your wife. I am now 8 weeks out and have been back to work for 3 weeks. I feel great now and have already lost 40 lbs. It is all worth it!!!

With what you do, I would suggest getting yourself a Camelback and sipping from it constantly. It sounds like you do a LOT of sweating at work thanks to that furnace on the other side of the wall.

My Nutritionist suggested getting a camelback pack, like bikers, etc. use. So I ordered this.

Give that a try, it's on your back and you don't have to go looking for Water since it's right there with a drinking tube!

Thank you so much for sharing. I haven't had my surgery yet but I did wonder how I would get in my liquids and your medicine cup is a great idea. I have several Nyquil cups and I think they will work perfectly.

Thank you!

I had my surgery one week ago today. Like you, I feared I would become dehydrated. But every day it gets a little easier to drink liquids. I keep something within reach all the time. I make up my shakes for the day and then sip on them through out the day. Takes me 5 individual servings to get the 3 shakes down. In between, I always make sure I have a water bottle with crystal light mixed in. I'm not a Water drinker so this works good for me and I get down 32 to 40 oz of water inbetween the shakes. Although I find I like both drinks as cold as i can get them. I saw my doctor yesterday, said I was doing great and no signs of dehydration. I had been concerned as I kept very little down 3 days out from surgery but the 4th day out, boy did my body improve. I got the drain out yesterday and had my first good night of sleep. I was able to take 3 weeks off from work and am going to pamper myself. But I know of others who went back in a week later, on a reduces work load. Please take the time to heal yourself, if you need it. Good luck, don't force the liquids, but keep at them. owl

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
