Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

There's absolutely no concern taking PPIs short term. It would be better for her than allowing reflux to continue untreated.

Short term PPI are fine.... reflux is worse as it damages your sphincter and if that happens.. food will struggle to stay down your esophagus

After I had the gastric band removed my acid stomachs went and I stopped bringing up mucous after eating. I used to take tums all the time.

Since the band was removed all these problems have gone.

The surgeon I saw about having the Gastric Sleeve said the acid reflux etc would return with the sleeve.

Constant acid on the Oesophagus can cause Barrets Oesaphagus a pre-cancerous condition.

Hi, looking for a place to discuss weight gain after five years. First I had the Lap Band and when that had to be taken out, a few months later I got the Gastric Sleeve. I notice a big difference between the two, I was never hungry with the band and I am not sure if I am hungry with the sleeve or just back to wanting to munch all the time. It has been two years with the sleeve and I know I can eat more.

I never reached my goal and had 40 still to go after both surgeries, but I know I have gained just from my clothes and the way they fit if not so much the scale.

I am so disgusted with myself after going through all of this that I cannot finish. I was looking for a local support group in the NJ area, still looking. Or a group on line with long term surgery people.

Anyway that for listening, write me back if you are having the same issues. ;-) Or know a place to go or a on line group.

Hi everyone, I am new to this site and am 3 years post op. I will try not to write a novel on here. LOL

I had emergency gallbladder surgery in November 2012 and had my sleeve surgery March 11, 2013. I almost didn't do it but I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and my dr said that this may be my only option since we had tried many other things and had no success with weight loss. I struggle being consistent with exercise because of the pain I would be in after a few days of exercising. But stuck with the program. I did very well in the beginning. Was so excited I went from 320 down to 248. I started having pain and issues in my lower abdomen and ovary area and was stuck at that weight for quite a few months give or take a few pounds. I pushed through the pain and stayed exercising but it was killing me and I would literally fall out in the chair and couldn't move much.

In April of 2014, I went in to see my OBGYN and he said he thinks I have been struggling with Endometriosis so he scheduled a Laparoscopy to go in and see what is going on. Turns out I did have it and along with my phalopian (however you spell it) tube sitting on my colon. So he fixed that and removed what he could of the endometriosis. He said I should be good for a couple of years...well I felt better for a couple of months and started hurting again. I was like what is the deal, I am in so much pain and just washing dishes, standing for a small amount of time or just washing and brushing my hair was a huge struggle for me. I was just that exhausted feeling and hurting all the time.

In August of 2014 he wanted to go back in and do another Laparoscopy. I told him if he is going back in he better take everything out with him...so needless to say I had a total hysterectomy. During these weeks off of work, I took the opportunity to move back to a town I loved and that is more of a healthier environment. (was living in a refinery area and sick all the time). So in the fall of 2014, I relocated by 3 hours to East Texas. I felt better and was beginning to lose again. Well in order for this move to happen, I took a huge pay cut and didn't have any insurance for a year. So wasn't able to get the things I need nor go to the doctor to keep medicine and such. In a little over a year I managed to gain 50 or so pounds back. I was back to trying any and everything to lose the weight again. Finally was able to have insurance after a year but no funds to actually go to the doctor. From the beginning of this year till now I slowly started to get things back rolling with eating better and exercising more...I still hurt after a few days but no where near what it used to be.

May 1st, 2016-we moved to a new place here in the same town. I received a little raise and am now able to get my thyroid back checked out to get back on the right medicine. During the move I lost all focus and drive for exercising. The move took a lot out of me. I just saw my family dr and he is concerned with my weight. wants me to lose 100 pounds. I said I have been trying. He mentioned the weight loss surgery (wasn't with this dr when I had it) I reminded him that I had it back in 2013. He said that's right and mentioned watching and tracking the calories. I explained I have been logging everything daily on myfitnesspal since the first of the year. He was baffled and said okay, stay logging all your food and try to get in at least 3 days of exercising each week and let me know what your thyroid dr says. He said there is something going on and it may be even more than just my thyroid disease. So I have my new thyroid dr I will see on the 8th and hopefully get some answers.

Have I been eating clean, no. Did I bring this weight on myself, yes. Do I exercise, yes but not consistently because of the exhaustion it brings on me but I still push myself to do it most of the time. Do I overeat, yes at times I do. I know what I have done and what needs to be done and have done it. My body is going through all sorts of things and I have to get that fixed so I can continue on this journey to be healthy. I need my thyroid meds to be right and some kind of hormones. I hope once I get those lined out things will start rolling again. I don't want to weigh a certain amount. I just want to be healthy and fit. I am open to any help or advice that anyone can give me...sorry this turned into a book.

Thanks for reading.

Melanie

@@mildollarsmile - I'm so sorry you are having such a difficult time. I don't have any words of wisdom or experience in what your going through other than I am a slow loser. Hopefully you can get your thyroid and hormones in balance and things will start to improve. I wish you the best and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hello, What do yo think and makes people regain weight? What happened to you?

As a psychologist working with bariatric patients, I would like to get more information so I can assist and help my patients in a better way.

Thank you for your comments!

@@M. Julia ...

I asked my shrink that about a year ago and posted about it. Here's a copy of that post:

My shrink works with a number of bariatric patients and has seen many people go through this process. Toward the end of yesterday's session, I asked: "What issues do you see patients struggling with who regain weight? And by that I don't mean that they're eating too much. I'm really asking what's going on inside them that leads them to regain?"

After thinking a moment, he said: "What I mostly see is that they're struggling to find new reasons and new motivations to focus on their weight and fitness.

"After they hit their goal weights, many of the rewards they got while losing weight go away. They're no longer motivated by seeing the scale move down. After a while, their family and friends get used to what they look like and stop commenting on their weight loss or weight. Even people who were their strongest supporters during the weight loss phase no longer offer supportive comments. And when this positive reinforcement disappears, that has a negative effect on the patients.

"So then they must find new goals and new motivations to maintain their weight and to be fit. And for some folks that's not easy."

So that's one shrink's brief observations about the cause of WLS patients' weight regain. However, I'm sure that's not the end of our conversation.

Hi guys. Id been compaining abt wt gain and lack of stamina etc since i got back from wales in 2014. Thiss week my card did an ECHO and found that my diastolic something ornother doesnt fully contract on that cycle so he rxd spironolactone and i have lost 6 lbs in 4 days. I was and am on lasix but this new med is very strange. It makes me nauseated and does make me feel like im on speed. I love not having to force myself to do something. I love not curtailing my activities because the thpught of getting in smd out of the car is too much. But i am terrified about what this means and how i am going to shift into yet another phase, here.

So i did not gain because i missed the accolades. I dont know what made me so hungry. I dont know why the addition of this drug at a small dosage is so potent. Anyone else have this experience? I have to lose about 4 to get back to under 200 again.

Rosie I'm sorry to hear about your heart problem. Spironolactone is not normally associated with weight loss but lasix is. It sounds like you have been storing Water which will happen with a dysfunctional heart. It is possible you will lose more weight on this drug combination.

Keep close to the medics. Best wishes.

I had my surgery in Sep 2013 & lost 64 lbs. I have currently gained back 25 of those lbs because I have been eating pretty much whatever I wanted. So yes, you can definitely gain your weight back if you aren't diligent about your diet.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
