So sick on pre op diet

Recommended Posts

I started my liquid diet on the 19th of July and will be having surgery on the 26th. I really am worried and hope I can get some help with my question. I have a hard time keeping the shakes down, they are so nasty and it doesn't help that I cannot stand milk. the first day I did ok. The second day I was only able to get one down, third day I couldn't handle it ran straight to the bathroom after drinking the shake. Today is my fourth day I have decided that I'm just going to drink Water and that is it. Even thinking about drinking broth or eating Jello makes me sick. So my question is will not eating at all shrink my liver? Will not eating cause problems with my surgery? Please help!

What kind of Protein Shakes are you using? I get GNC Whey Protein. I have used both chocolate and vanilla with DaVinci flavorings and they are great. You will need the protein in these in your post-op diet, so please find something you can tolerate. You can also mix in Water (not quite as flavorful) or soy milk (vanilla is good). I actually crave the flavor of these. Now that I am on regular food, I still have a shake every morning not just for the nutrition, but for the yummy taste. Hope it gets better for you...K

You need to have Protein in order for your body to continue to function. If you drink just Water then your body will go into starvation mode instead of "fat burning mode".

Did you get some sample packets of different types of Protein powders? That would be a good way to find one that you can tolerate. Also, if it is milk that you don't like, maybe you have a lactose intolerance. Perhaps trying something like lactaid would help.

Regardless - I would speak to your surgeon and dietician about this. They need to know and could probably make some other suggestions for things that you can do.

If you have a GNC around...go find out if you can tolerate Isopure. It's more like a gatorade. Be warned the colder they are, the less "after taste"...but they come in multiple flavors. 1 bottle has 40 grams of Protein and 0 carbs.

But you canNOT give up, you need Protein and it is not just pre-op. You will be relying on Protein drinks or shakes for weeks!!!!

Try this...1/2Cup Water, 1/2Cup ice, Tspn or more of instant coffee (if you like coffee), 2 capfuls of a sugar free Syrup if you want (I love carmel) and 1 scoop of vanilla protein. PUt it in a blender and enjoy your frapp!

Again, don't give up. This is NOT negotiable.

Best of luck,

Susan

I've only tried The whey Protein I can't afford much right now, but I was told about a protein shot I'm not sure what it is I'm going to look into that. Also I have never liked milk so I'm sure that is my problem it just makes me sick.

Mix your Protein Powder with Water. That is all I have ever done bc I also can't stand milk. You can't live off of water only until your surgery. Also, after surgery you will be on clear and full liquids so you need to be able to tolerate those things. Keep us posted.

My pre-op diet was no-sugar added Instant Breakfast by Carnation...you'll find it in the Cereal aisle in any grocery store. It's not the highest in protein but it was tasty and it's what my nutritionist told me to drink. It comes in strawberry, vanilla and two kinds of chocolate. Hope this helps.

I am on day 3 of my pre-op diet and I can't have any milk products (not by choice)...but I am using ProteinBlitz from the Vitamin shop or GNC (it sounds similar to isopure). It has 30 grams of Protein, 120 calories and 1 g carbohydrate. I drink 2 per day to get my 60 grams of Protein. They cost about $3 each and you can go in and purchase one out of their refrigerator. That way to don't have to spend a lot of money to find out if you like them.

Good luck on your surgery.

OK let me start by saying not eating anything is a really bad idea. Now that that's out of the way, maybe the answer is a lot simpler than you think. What kind of Protein shakes are you using? There are so many varieties out there, one has to be able to suit you. Even Slim Fast makes a Lo Carb version that's actually very palatable. Also, if you're making the shakes from powder, you don't HAVE to use milk. You can make the shake with Water if milk makes you ill or even Silk (Soy milk I believe). You shouldn't use milk if it makes you sick.

I suggest going to GNC, or using http://vitalady.com/ - GNC will let you return unused portions of the Protein Shakes you don't like within 30 days I believe. Vitalady sells individual serving samples so you're not stuck paying for huge tubs of something you won't like.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
