My surgery day experience ...so far.

Recommended Posts

I got sleeved this morning and I feel pretty good. I WA pretty fortunate for a couple reasons.

1. So far, I haven't experienced any of the pain in the shoulders from the gas.

2. My doctor went to a seminar to learn single port sleeving and because I'm so short, he did it for me. This means that I only have one incision which is in my belly button.

3. I have yet to feel even the slightest nausea...knock on wood. I'm only allowed ice chips. I can't even drink small sips of Water. I'm actually kind of nervous about restriction because j haven't felt any! Does anyone know at what point I will start feeling it?

I am so tired right now so I'm going to push my happy button (morphine) and go to sleep! I'll repudate this post either late today or tomorrow!!! Sending healing thoughts out to everyone else who got sleeved today.

So happy for you!

As far as the restriction, I'll say a couple of things. I'm just a little over 2 weeks post op and while still in the hospital and all drugged up, I managed to drink a cup of broth. I was so not with it and all the meds made me not feel a thing. The nurse came in and liked to have freaked out. He got on to me and told me that was way too much liquid for my new stomach. So I would just sip and do it slowly.

Also, with Water and even ice, I do not feel any restriction but I now make sure I take no more in than 4 oz at a time. When eat a pureed bean Soup, I feel some restriction.

I was told today at my nutritional class that when I start on the mushy phase, that I will definitely feel more restriction.

I think it all just depends on the density of what we're putting in there.

I'm sure someone else that has been sleeved longer will be able to elaborate.

Congrats Bitties on your single port Sleeve - also known as scarless VSG or spider VSG. Exciting. Great that you are doing well enough to post and then push the pain med button. HA HA

Hope you have a speedy recovery and looking forward to future posts of your successful weightloss

Ah, I am so jealous! I am really hoping for a single incision surgery, but whatever my surgeon does I will live with. At least I get a surgery! Congrats!

Thanks everyone for all of your positive thoughts. I will say that all of the rumors about the second day are 100% true. For some reason, I didn't think that I would have to go through all of that because my first day went so well...boy was I ever wrong!!

Basically I've been throwing up anything I try to get down since 5 this morning. They also made me stay an extra night so that they could get the nausea and pain under control. Finally about an hour ago, the charge nurse came waltzing in my room with two syringes. I have no idea what was in them, but I've been cured! I definitely recommend having a supportive person with you because it can be rough and the nurses just don't have time to come in your room every time that you throw up.

I will admit that sometime this afternoon I honestly asked myself if I had made a huge mistake. I know everyone goes through this, but for everyone who is just starting this journey, know that those feelings will eventually go away. Make sure you advocate for yourself and have them try as many different drugs as possible so that YOU are comfortable.

Again, thanks for all of your happy thoughts and kind words. Know that I'm sending more out your way too :)

Sorry your second day was not as easy as the first, but it will get better every day. Glad that nurse with the mystery syringes came along!!!

To answer your original question, you will start feeling major restriction when you start mushies and get on a regular diet.

Hope you have an uneventful rest of recovery!smile.gif

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
