Any horse people on this site?

Recommended Posts

I don't think I have ever seen anyone post anything even remotely related to horses, owning, riding, etc. I am a bit of a horsenut myself. I own 4 horses, 2 are retired- 1 trail horse and 1 show horse (Arabian).

Just curious if there are any other horse "nuts" like myself.

I don't know if you would call me a nut but I do love horses. Because of my weight I haven't ridden in years. I used to ride when I was a kid at a local stable, I was in a show once. The last time I rode was probably 12 years ago or so before I got too big to do so. It is one of my goals to be able to ride again. Growing up I always wanted to own a horse but I don't have the land or the funds to do anything like that.

Too broke and too fat to be able to own and ride a horse. HOWEVER, one of my long term goals is to be able to have a couple out in my back yard. (We live on acreage, on horse property, lol.) I just want to get good trail horses, as there is a LOT of desert around here to go explore and enjoy on horseback.

I competed at the Arabian U.S. Nationals last year and won a Top Ten award. I basically starved myself for months leading up to the competition just to look sort of normal last year. I got down to 190# but as soon as the competition was over, the pounds came rolling right back like I knew they would. I couldn't sustain the way I lost the weight.

I hope to compete again this Fall at Nationals, but will have to see. I tried to post a picture of me at Nationals last year and when I click on the icon for inserting an image it wants me to grab it from a URL and not my PC. Anyone tell me how to direct it to look at my PC to upload a picture?

For anyone who has gotten away from riding for whatever reasons, I hope you are able to find your way back to riding when you are able. It is just the most amazing thing ever to be one with your horse. I grew up riding and showing, so I guess its in my blood.

I too am a horse person. I own 5 game Quarter Horses and a little miniture. Because of my weight I have not been able to compete for about four years. Had vsg done on June 13 and am planning to compete next season. This year I will cheer my husband on and heal....and play with my mini!

Awesome! What type of competition does your husband do? You said game, so I'm assuming rodeo or reining events? I used to run barrels, poles and keyhole when I was younger and then got addicted to showing Arabians.

I used to have horses but my bf has 6 horses. One is an Arabian stallion and he is gorgeous. My bf lives on 700 acres and the horses are not broken. He's hoping to get at least couple of them trained this summer.

I would love to see pics of your horses!!!

Samantha, how did you come about rescuing that guy? There is a guy I met once that does commercial flying and does regular shipments over to Europe of Belgians. He said he can carry up to 100 at a time. I'm sure you can imagine why they are making the trip. Makes me sick.

Lovely Lo, that's great you keep the older guys around. It's expensive when they get older but I can't imagine shipping them down the road just because they don't have a useful job. I have 2 older ones myself.

What part of the country do you guys live in?

I'm from the KC area (30 minutes south actually) and have what I guess they call a "ranchette". I was just down there for surgery on the 22nd. I actually got to see some nice outer areas of Dallas (Frisco and some other smaller towns). I really liked it a lot, but the only thing that seemed a bit of a challenge aside from being soooo hot is sparse pastures which must also mean it is tough to get good hay. I feel brome and also alfalfa.

p.s. I'm with you. I can't imagine not letting my retirees enjoy a peaceful retirement. I tell my old boys their only job now is to stay as healthy as they can. LOL For the most part they are holding up their end. One is a PB Arabian, 25 yrs old and another is a unregistered (rescue) Arabian that I believe is in his late 20's.

I can't figure out how to post pictures here for some reason. When I click on inserting picture it keeps trying to make me pull it from an internet link. If you figure it out, let me know.

I used to do dressage, clear-round jumping and western pleasure competitions when I was younger - mostly now I would ride for pleasure were there a horse on this planet that could carry me, but there's not (at the moment!) I'm hoping to get down to a reasonable weight and get back into riding at some point, even if it's just the occasional trail ride. I've always wanted to own my own horse but don't have the room or the fundage right now.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
