I'm so scared to go to Mexico now.

i received a lot of negative feedback, too. when people hear mexico they freak thanks to the media. i went alone to Tijuana and never felt unsafe. i walked the streets and loved it! don't be afraid. i have never heard of anything bad happening to a patient in mexico and i did a LOT of research before going. good luck!

I have been in méxico for the last few days, Tijuana to be exact. I feel safe here. As for Monterrey i have been hearing on the Mexican news that 42 bodies were just found headless and mangled. They say that Monterrey isn't very safe right now.

Just be careful.

Hi!!! First of all good luck to you. Secondly you are going to have a great time with Dr Kelly & his team & the area is VERY safe in tijuana!

I just got back last night from Tijuana after getting sleeved with Dr Kelly & have nothing but great things to say about the Dr, his team & the whole experience!

Please don't let your family scare you. I actually had to change my PCP as she was scaring me so much about Mexico!!! But Dr Kelly reassured me it is a safe neighborhood. I never felt scared there. The only time I was on my own was in the hotel & that is like a really fancy nice hotel! Cecy would take me everywhere & either her or Omar were always with me.

If you want to call me personally I am also happy to chat with you about my experience, just send me a PM & I will give you my home phone number!

I also have a blog you can read, about my experience with Dr Kelly & my journey.

Ok, if you take the crime rate along with population, the crime rate is lower in most Mexican states than USA states.

Houston or new Orleans ? There's nothing scary about these two cities. I live in Houston and basically new Orleans too, my boyfriend lives there and I'm always there, LOL! That was funny but these places r not scary ?!?!

I say USE COMMON SENSE. I can def. Understand y your family is upset but it does depend on where exactly your going. There is an actual Drug War going on and shouldn't be taken lightly, they are actually kidnapping random ppl, dipping bodies in acid to get rid of them and like someone said earlier I believe they just found Forty bodies headless and tied up n the street. Where do you hear of things like this in the us? They are comparing the death count to war in Baghdad. Long story short God forbid something happen to someone but if it did do u think they would be alive to post it on this site?? I just had to say something on this, if you do go just don't be nieve and go with your gut. Check everything and the facts out for yourself!

I just got back from Tijuana last night. I was sleeved by Dr. Ponce on May 15th. My coordinator and a driver met me at the airport and took me straight to the hospital. The staff at INT hospital was very efficient and kind. I am a nurse , and I can tell you, you will not get the nurse patient /ratio in the U.S. as I had in Tijuana. The floors are small (only 10 rooms ) on the third floor and there were 3 nurses on duty during the night. They administered pain meds, IV antibiotics and nausea meds without me asking for them. I am a diabetic and the nurses were in my room every hour post op monitoring my blood sugar and administering insulin. ( it is not uncommon for diabetics to have high sugars after illness, stress or trauma to the body).

The hospital is very very clean, the OR was immaculate!

On Thursday I was discharged to the Hotel Lucerna, My coordiantor Laurie and Dr. Ponce's OR nurse Randy drove me personally to the hotel escorted me in and took me to my room! Laurie , even arranged for a plastic surgeon to consult with me in my room for anticipated surgery in a year. ( a mommy makeover). I left Friday morning back to San Diego. My driver picked me up promptly at 10 a.m. There were 3 of us returning to the U.S. The wait at the border was only 10 min as our driver had a medical lane pass. I never saw anything suspicious or unsafe. The worst part of my trip was waiting 3 hours at the airport to catch my flight back to Dallas.

I have only good things to say about my experience in Tijuana. I am home recuperating... sore, yes! Gassy yes but all in all doing well!

P.S. Laurie is much cheaper than the other coordinators. It is 4,500.00 for surgery with Dr. Ponce versus 5,000.00- 6,0000 that is charged by others . Laurie has worked with Dr. Ponce for 7 years and has a good rapport with him and his staf of surgeons!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
