Dehydration is a major concern post-op. coffee is a natural diuretic therefore it is highly recommended to cut it out until you can safely get in all of your clear fluids.

As for caffeine pills, they are typically full of other crap too. Your liver is already going to be working overtime to process anesthesia, pain meds, and all the rapid weight loss. Do you really want to task it with more crap to process? ? ? Just a thought.

I started back to having coffee after I could get in all my other fluids.

Caffeine in any form will dehydrate you. Especially in the summer time you have to really watch out for that. I know of a few people that ended up in the E.R. getting bags of fluids pumped into them via a cute little I.V....ICK! lol

Like Tiffykins said, I laid off all coffee and diet coke (the only things I drank per-surgery days...yep, dying inside a little bit!) because of the dehydration factor but also because coffee really amps up the acids in your newly sleeved tummy and it impedes the healing process.

Hi- I feel your Pang!

I was Mr. coffee...

That was the first to go off THAT list, day one after orientation.

I started out by mixing half Decaf in my container of coffee- I know your thinking DECAF- YUK!

yea mee too... 35 years...or more.

when that got half way down(1 week) I mixed in another half decaf, and again, about 1 month and I was drinking decaf-

the biggest hang-p I have is making sure when I order that I say DECAF.

I loves me coffee- I don't need that buzz.

on the bright side- My BP has never been lower...

I am now a take it or leave it-

I have maybe a cup every other day- although it is for the enjoyment not the need.

And so i go to a sleep study class- half way through, 3 people take a break (including the RT, and get coffee- the small room was filled with wonderful smells- 1 gal even ate a burrito.

I was really put off, a two hour class and these people couldn't wait?

If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got.

I quit drinking coffee about a week before surgery and haven't had any since (1 month now). I have had no caffeine in a month! Not even after I went back to work. Yeah I was tired in the mornig, but no more than I was after drinking 2 cups pre-surgery. I used to have daily headaches; I have only had 1 since my surgery which I blamed on the anesthsia. I think my lack of headaches is due mostly from cutting out the caffeine. You will miss it a little at first, but when you get it out of your system the cravings will go away hopefully. They did for me!

Hi, I don't drink coffee but was a major diet soda drinker which is full of caffeine. I stopped cold turkey the night before surgery the withdrawals from caffeine are pretty miserable I had a pounding headache for almost a week. They have coffee that has 1/2 the caffeine which might help you wean off of it.

I switched to Decaf coffee long before the surgery and was able to drink it within days of the surgery. In fact, I mix the Unjury's chocolate Protein powder with coffee and have a yummy mocha coffee drink . I've had some hot tea with caffeine after the surgery but I don't drink much of it and haven't had any difficulties keeping hydrated.

I agree with Chef Neil and suggest making a switch to decaf if you can and I definitely wouldn't take caffeine pills!

Ok I love coffee and I crave the taste. Does all this mean that DEcaffinated coffee is ok or do we need to stay off all coffee and hot drinks?

No, you dont have to stay off the hot drinks... Actually, in the beginning your esphogaus gets really tight in the morning and it's recommended that you sip on some warm broth or tea to help. Well, I dont like either of them and discovered some bariatric hot chocolate! It's 80 cal, 15g Protein, and 5 carbs... It tastes great and took the place of my coffee each morning. To this day I still drink it each morning. Check them out here: http://www.mybariatricpantry.com/Pantry_Selections_Hot_Chocolate_Protein_Drinks_p/ps-ht_choc.htm

The reason you are asked to WEAN off the caffiene right away is because you will have bad headaches if you are addicted to it. I bought decaff coffe and gradually mixed more in as time went on. The last thing you want to go through during your surgery is caffiene withdrawal. Its a nasty bugger and you're already going to feel miserable from surgery.

The reason they don't want you on caffiene immediately post surgery is because it will dehydrate you. Its really hard to get all your fluids in right away. It doesn't mean you can never have it again, unless you choose not to. I drink coffee now but I'm also 9 mos out and I can also drink 120 oz of Water per day too. That said, I stick with half caff now because the full stuff will really have me buzzing! Even if I don't have any for a day I don't get any headaches.

After I went without caffiene the month after surgery, I never went back. I now drink Decaf and enjoy the heck out of it. All this is temporary. Before you know it you will find your 'groove' and everything will fall into place.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
