Will having low Vitamin D postpone surgery??

Recommended Posts

I didn't think to ask and all they told me was to start taking Dry Vitamin D for 8 weeks then they take me off for 2 weeks and run blood work. This will put me in to the time where I am hoping my surgery will be scheduled - July/August. Anyone had low Vitamin D before surgery?

I did but it didn't delay my surgery. I had 8 once-weekly supplements - 5 before surgery and 3 after (took the last one yesterday). They'll test my levels again with my one-month post-op blood work 4/18.

Hopefully it'll work out easily for you as well. (I also had low potassium - it had to be up before surgery and they tested me for that but with the supplements I was fine).

Thank you! It just didn't even occur to me to ask when they told me!

It should not stop surgery. My D is low but I take supplements daily for it. My dr said as long as I take supplements it would be OK. My Calcium levels are low, too--stands to reason as vit D helps absorb the Calcium. Sorry you had probs with potassium deficiency. I have been lucky--my labs are normal except for calcium and Vit D.

HI...this should NOT delay your surgery. Vitamin D levels are not one of the parameters that we specifically look at when performing surgery. Among the most important parameters are: Hemoglobin, coagulation times, and white blood cell count. Of course we look at the whole lab report, but Vitamin D is not typically as important as the one's mentioned.

You are advised to ask your physician about taking Vit D supplementation after surgery. In addition, it would be advisable to find the specific reason for the low levels of Vit D.

Let me know if you have any questions...best of luck.

I have heard that a good percentage of women in the US have low D levels.

Hey I know that this is an older topic, but since I am Vitamin D deficient and have been recommended to take 50,000IU per week for 8 weeks I was wondering how this played out for you. Did it delay your surgery at all??

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
