Do you like food?

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon everyone!! I have not been sleeved yet, I am scheduled for Feb 24th. I reaching out to those post op sleevers with this question, particularly people who took Phentermine as an attempt to loose the weight before you went the Sleeve Route. If so, you would know how it made you feel towards food.... basically that it is gross. So what I am asking is, How does food taste to you post surgery? I really hated how Phentermine made me feel all around, the side effects were horribe. And even people who didnt take Phentermine before just let me know how you feel about food as well. Does it taste the same? Do you like it? Do you still have your favorite treats? Has your taste for food changed? This is my last concern I had in having the surgery so please speak up and give me whatever input you can. Even just tell me how you feel in general, if at all diffrent or anything then you did before surgery. I understand you would feel diffrent b/c of the fact that you are losing weight and that it makes you happy, but I mean "noteworthy diffrent." I thank you all in advance for your answers!!!

God Bless,

B_&_K'sMamma

I found after surgery, I had a intolerance for anything with nutrasweet or aparteme-basically most sugar free stuff. It made my stomach very unsettled-not throwing up but just something was not right feeling. The first few days after surgery things were a little metalic but that is from the anesthia. I find now I look at Protein first and prefer it. I used to be a carboholic but I have not induldged hardly in any bread, rice or Pasta. Today I had a peice of chocolate candy and felt it was way to sweet for me. I have not had anything like that since prior to Thanksgiving.

I am so much happier and even though it is just a little over 2 months from surgery-I am already halfway to goal. :D

Right after surgery, hardly anything tasted good to me. I had to force myself to eat. Now that time has passed by, I do like food again. I just can't eat much of it. I don't have any desire for sugar or sweets at all at this point (cakes, Cookies, etc). I honestly crave good foods. I eat meat and a few bites of vegetables. Sometimes I do eat fresh fruit because it makes me feel better. One thing I do like is the diet Swiss Miss hot chocolate. It has on 25 calories and 4 carbs if you make it with Water. I don't really care for coffee like I used to, so I drink that instead. One issue I do have is that once I am full, I don't want to be around food anymore. It makes me feel sick. I try to measure my food to avoid taking one bite too many. At restaurants, I really pace myself to avoid getting to full. It is pretty amazing when you think about it though! It's the restriction I wanted and love! For me, I am just not obsessed with food anymore. I eat a small amount and then I go on with my day. It's pretty great!

I suppose ive been lucky with food. Things taste the same. Better actually. I even flirted with ice cream today during the super bowl (dont worry it was a tea spoon). And it actually tasted better to me, probably because i actually took the time to taste and and not just woofed it down.

My food tastes never changed and now that I am nearly 2 years post op, I really can eat anything I want.

I enjoy a variety of food and I never feel deprived. This is the !

I was like you with the Phentermine... it worked great, but I was a bound-up, raging beotch on it.

My tastes never changed, I still like everything I did before surgery. Right after surgery, regarding food I felt the same as with the Phentermine, just really no interest in it for the most part. For the first couple of months after getting back into solids, eating was kind of disappointing because everything still tasted so wonderful, but to be able to only have a few little bites and not get that old over-stuffed, way-too-satisfied feeling was kind of a let down (but at the same time, THRILLING to not be able to eat to the point of barfiness!). Now, I don't ever feel deprived but still, only eat maybe a quarter of what I ate, in volume, before surgery. That's in a sitting.... I could graze all day if I let myself (which is something you have to avoid after any WLS).

In buffet situations, I have inadvertently eaten to the point where I thought I would have to urp it all back up. My in-laws took us to a Chinese Buffet a couple of months ago and my mind was totally not on what I was eating, so I had a little of this, a little of that--next t hing I know, we're at an intersection and I'm looking to make sure I can open my car door to puke without having another car run into it... it was THAT bad, and right there, and miserable....soooooo, mistakes happen, and I am rambling and have completely lost my train of thought and forgotten what your original question was in the first place.

I will say that a little sugar goes a long way now... especially liquid (sweet tea, ice cream, shakes, stuff like that). THAT will make me feel really icky, really fast, which is a good thing.

I must be one of the minority, 2 months post op and LITTLE tastes good. Sweets are especially sickening. Everything tastes different than it used to and Soups that I loved are pretty vile right now. Everything else tastes blah or even bad. Had my wifes spaghetti and meat balls Saturday and yesterday and WOW it was REALLY good, I loved it before and it is STILL one of my favorites.

BTW: The spaghetti is spinach spaghetti with Hunts Tomato sauce and a dab of honey. Plenty of chopped up Italian meatballs too. Even better the second / third day too.

My tastes changed big time post-op. Anything sweetened with aspartame was horrific and over sweet. Foods were bland, and eating was a chore. I attribute that to the complete loss of hunger, and that my tastes had changed.

This lasted about 3 months. I learned to overseason food, spices/seasonings were pretty much doubled for everything. I added lots of creole seasoning to things, and lemon-pepper was used in most of my chicken meals.

My love for food has returned. Food tastes fabulous, and I enjoy eating again. I noticed food tasting good around 4-5 months out, and now at 20 months out, food is definitely a pleasant experience again. I feel fabulous in general. I eat normal amounts of food, and by normal, I mean in comparison to my naturally thin, active girlfriends. I eat smaller portions than my 12 year old son, but he's a bottomless pit of a child with the metabolism of a gnat. I don't really "love" food like I did before surgery, but I don't dread eating anymore. Things taste great, I enjoy my small portions and do not feel deprived.

I'm so happy to see your response, Tiffykins! Eating is such a chore for me right now. I think something is going to taste good, and then I'm so disappointed when it doesn't. It makes it so hard to eat (I NEVER thought I'd hear myself say that!). I don't want to over induldge...I just want my little meal to taste good so I can get some nutrition! I'm glad there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
