Hi all....

I had my sleeve procedure one week ago. It was an open procedure and I feel like I am improving but just never can do what most people are saying on this. I am sick of eating/drinking Protein Shakes and don't like most of them. I have one favorite that I got in my book from my doctor. Does anyone have any good recipes for Protein shakes? Maybe some that taste pretty good:) I also wanted to know if anyone had the open procedure and how long it took to really feel good. I have to go back to work in a week and was wondering now if I am going to be ready to do so....I would appreciate any feedback!! Thanks!

I have asked so many times why they can't make a pill with all my daily Protein. I am 7 weeks out and I have been trying out new Protein shakes but let me give you a tip I didnt learn until I was already frustrated with the taste of these shakes...If you buy from GNC you can return what you dont like...no hassel!!!! I have been using their 100% whey Gold standard I like extreme chocolate and I mix it with just Water not cold just tap. Once I was past stage 1 foods I have been adding 2 TBLSP of PB2 (a powder Peanut Butter I get from the grocery store). It tastes pretty good but you have to keep shaking it because it settles and gets gritty. The protein does ok by itself but when you put in the PB2 it just settles. I mix mine in a shaker bottle and just keep shaking. Hope that helps...I had a laproscopic surgery. Good Luck to you!

Ahhhh, the good ole Protein shake. . . well what i remember doing was adding extracts which I liked. . . my all time favorite Protein shakes were the following, if it's chocolate Protein Powder, adding a bit (tbspn) of Peanut Butter (I used real Peanut Butter cause PB2 is too chalky) and using skim milk instead of Water. . .tastes just like reeses pieces or adding cherry extract, tastes like chocolate cherries . . . if it's vanilla Protein Powder add pumpkin spice or different extracts, peanut butter is good too. . . but I would use skim milk instead of Water to mix cause water is just nasty with protein powders. . . and you can also google protein powder receipes . . . good luck and remember this is only a temporary thing and this too shall pass. . . .

With an open procedure, I really doubt you will be ready to go back to work in a week. I was out for 2 with laproscopic. I probably could have forced myself back, but I would have been so tired. With open, they have cut through so much muscle tissue, I don't know how you could sit at a desk all day. What kind of work do you do?

As for the Protein, just do your best. Right now, liquids are the most important thing. I hated ALL protein shakes. I got through with unjury chicken Soup and "unflavored" powder mixed in applesauce, sf pudding, and hot cocoa (just not too hot or it will curdle - YUCK!)

Best of luck!

it would helpt to know what you have tried, what you like, what you like, what you don't like, to get a starting place. There are so many options and tastes and everyone is different.

As for the recovery. When I had a C-section, I was out 6 weeks (for the baby), but I know I couldn't have gone back to work sooner than 4 weeks. You may need to get a letter from your doctor indicating unexpected complication have resulted in a necessary extended recovery time. Also brush up on FMLA (in the US) to see if that might help you when you say you need more time off or maybe half days.

I would say you have to get used to the Protein powder right now the best one that I have found is the GNC wheybolic amplified. It has a very good taste and is blended with two different Proteins so that it is a finer powder..not as chalky. It truely is the best out there for me right now .. But as the thin one says if you make it with skim it tastes creamier. you can also add sugar free choclate Syrup with it and make it actually taste a lot better..Also if you want nutritional value it has 20 of proteins per scoop and I think around 80 calories and very low on carbs..good luck I know it sucks looking for new protein suppliments. I don't know about all doctors but mine said that if I had to opened up he would not release me for 5 weeks. But for me i do a lot of lifting and moving etc....Good luck and let us know how your progress..

2 weeks recovery time isn't enough for any kind of open procedure. Mine was laproscopic and I went back at 2 weeks it was to soon. My body started aching all the time, and I just felt horrible all the time. Give your body more rest, and try your hardest to get in what Protein you can.. Your body needs it!!

Have you tried Atkins. I think those are yummy. They are only 15 grams but I mix one scoop of amp powder in it which is 20 grams. So that makes 35 for one shake. And if you need it a little tastier you can squeeze in some hersheys sugar free Syrup. Yummy

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
