I go to the support meetings. We´re in southern Indiana. I find them helpful, especially when those who have been banded for a year or more come.

Received my third fill Thursday, and think I finally am getting good restriction.

Hello, is Louisville, Ky to far for you, they have two meetings on different days? One in downtown on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 and one on the fourth Thursday of every month at Nortion Suburban hospital. They are also now offering group at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, In, but not sure if it open to everyone or to their patients only? Good luck

Hi, Global

sounds like you are doing well, I go next week for another appointment, I have had one fill thus far. My high was 312 and I am down to 272, so no complaints. I do need to get myself to the Y to work out though. I am slipping into the loose skin zone and hating it. Keep up the good work.

It is hard to beleive that it has been 13 months since I have been banded. A lot of things have happen since being banded and I will do that in another post.In June of 2007 I went in for a sleep study and found out that I did indeed have sleep apena. I was put on a CPAP machine in August 07 and did ok with it. I was banded in September of 2007. After being banded I was having some issues with the CPAP machine, in regards to being bloated all the time and taking the mask off at night. I talked with my doctor about this and he had the machine set to the lowest settings. He also suggested that I look into getting a dental applaince. I went and meet with the dentist who deals in sleep apnea and she said it would not be a problem and so it took about 4 months to get it approved by insurance. I was fitted with the herbest retainer in February, 2008. I went back to my doctor who handles the sleep apnea in August and he was real pleased with the way I looked and the amount of weight lost. So the doctor order a new sleep study. I had the sleep study on year to the date of being banded. I will say that the band can help people get away from using the CPAP. Keep in mind that everyone is differant and what works for one might not work for the other person. Here is the results of the study:Per BandOriginal study (pre weight loss) Weight 250 BMI 40Breathing event per hour: 68Total breathing cessation per hour: 49Lowest recorded oxygen level: 70%BandedNew Study: post weight lossWeight 186 BMI 29.1 Breathing events per hour: 19.4Total breathing cessation per hour: 19.4Lowest recorded oxygen level: 91%With the Herbst Retainer Dental Device:Breathing events per hour: 4.6 (counting little bitty ones 6.2)Total breathing cessation per hour: 4Lowest oxygen level: 92%It turns out that with the Herbst, you are worst when you lie on your left side. Then you have 8.3 events per hour. In dream sleep, you have 10.2 events per hour.I went to the sleep doctor this week to review this study and he said that I could stop using the CPAP Machine and continue with the Herbst Retainer. He also said that my numbers were low enough that even if I did not use the retainer that I could do away with the CPAP. He also felt the numbers would go down lower with more weight loss. My goal range is between 165-175. He also said that I did not need to come back and see him unless I feel that Iam having problems. He said that I can just go back to the dentist and get a new herbest retainer when this one wears out in a few years. Also I no longer have any snoring issues either. So as you can see here proof is in the pudding about the band and how it can help everyone out. It just takes a lot of time and effort to make it all happen. It does not happen overnight.Chris

Hello, Im from Mishawaka, In near South bend. I was banded April 23, 2008. I was doing well until this past weekend when I thought my band slipped. I had alot of pain with drinking and eating. Eating was impossible. If I got anything down, it came right back up. But I went to my surgeon yesterday and he said Nothing slipped. He just took out some of my fill and im 100% better. Woo, Hoo!!

That's great news Chris! I don't have a band yet...I am still researching. I am hoping to make a decision soon. I am thinking about going with Dr. Curry in Cincinatti. He has such a great reputation and I am definately looking for a quality doc.

Hello fellow Banded hoosiers

I''m from Muncie and Dr. Stewart did my surgery and Ball Memorial Hospital. This is my 3rd day post surgery and even though I feel better each day, the ususal pain from the port site can be unbearable at times. Do you have any tips on how to get all the Water and Protein Drinks in each day? And how do I know when I hungry and need to eat or not? That sounds so strange to me but sometimes I don't know if I'm hungry during meal times? need help....

I pack a water bottle around with me all the time. It has been my constant companion for 5 years now. Protein, there are any number of protein supplement products on the market. Probably the best known among bandsters is UNJURY, and comes in chocolate, vanilla and unflavored as well as chicken broth flavored. I do use Atkins shakes on occasion as well. I try to shoot for around 60 grams of protein intake a day, sometimes I get that sometimes I don't, but its a number that works well for me.

You learn your hunger as you move along. As I was first banded I wasn't as hungry between meals either, but I just set myself up on a schedule and made sure I got my calories in for the day, as well as get myself moving. As I lost, the hunger showed up!

Good luck on your journey and if I can be of any help, feel free to PM me.

Tom

hey everybody. i'm from the Lebanon area in Indiana. Just northwest of Indianapolis.

I was banded yesterday by Dr. Keith McEwen form Community in Noblesville. He was the best!!! I am self-pay so this was a large investment for me. I researched and about two years ago I even went through one of the classes through a large hospital in Indianapolis. I felt like a number there. I decided not to do it at that time cause insurance wouldn't pay and I wasn't that comfortable with it.

In the beginning of November, a girl I worked with (she just came on board in July) confided in me that she had the lapband surgery in April and had lost about 60 lbs. She told me about her doctor and I called him immediately and made an appointment. My insurance had a "no weight loss treatments" clause so I went the medical finance way.

I really like Dr. McEwen and his staff. I met with the dietician, exercise physiologist, and even had a psych evaluation. As soon as the appointments out of the way, we scheduled the surgery and I started preop diet.

I would highly recommend Dr. McEwen to anyone considering this surgery. I had my surgery yesterday at the Indiana Surgery Center. Dr. McEwen requires an overnight stay which was the only was I would ever have any surgery again. I don't handle anest. well and usually get sick. I would have been sick if the nurses weren't so quick on their feet with ice packs and medicine. The nursing staff was great!!!

I lost 12 lbs preop. I stepped on the scales before I left this morning, just for giggles, and it said I was up 3 lbs. I know that its all fluids though. My nurse thought 3 was great because she joked that they had given my at least 10 lbs. of Fluid. It did feel that was since I was on an IV for 23 hours non-stop.

If anyone in Indiana is looking for a surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. McEwen from Community.

Kelli:biggrin:

I'm from Carmel, and I'm getting banded on Saturday! I'm getting banded at Clarian North by Dr. Samer Mattar. He is a GREAT doctor; unfortunately, I'm one of his last band patients! Most of his band patients are given to another doctor in his group and he primarily does gastric bypass now.

Can't wait to be banded!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
