The Official What You Will Need For Your Upcoming Weightloss Surgery Thread!

Chipping of teeth is common in medical emergency situations if a patient needs to be intubated but during a surgery there is not the sense of urgency there and so the anesthesiologist and surgeons are a lot more gentle and not moving quickly to save a life. They just throw that out there as a disclaimer.

I saw this little warmer thing at Walmart, it is like a heating pad i guess, it has little pockets where you put your hands, and it sits right on your stomach. i didnt get to check it out throughly enough but it didnt look like it has a cord on it, that might be easier than taking your heating pad you can just sit up with that on your tummy. It was 10 bucks, im going to check it out next time i have more time and let you know how it stays warm...

I personally dont think you will need a suitcase for your hospital stay... you are not moving into the hospital. My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow and the only i will be taking is my cell phone charger, toothe brush and paste and thats about it. What i wear to the hospital is what I'm leaving in. My girlfriend had the surgery and to be honest she was in no mood or state to even want to put on an eye mask or rob or to knit lol...

Be comfortable and you will be fine.

The one thing I took that made me feel comfy was my fleece blanket.

I wish I had taken my own Kleenex and toilet paper...the "John Wayne" stuff the hospital had was harsh!! LOL!!!

Thank you so much for posting this!

I can't tell you how many great ideas are on here that I never would have thought of.

My surgery is scheduled for this Thursday (Nov. 17th) and I feel so much more prepared going in having read all of this.

THANKS :smile1:

May I suggest you also keep a running total of meds, etc that are administered...and make sure that before they give you any otc meds ask the cost - you have the right to bring them in if they are charging too much.

Note everyone you saw and what they did and how much time they took - especially if you have complications later.

These are for you later on to be able to dispute any charges you should not have to pay.

What a great list, thank you very much.

I would like to add from past experience that if you take your own pillow(s) from home, use a brightly colored (or at a minimum, non-white) pillow case so that they don't take your pillow accidentally.

When my husband had surgery (not WLS), the hospital tried to give him at huge cost every medicine, Vitamin, and supplement that he listed on his admitting paperwork. The list of everything that you've taken recently and assume is for them to avoid complications, NOT so that they can give it to you and charge you!

I had to send them away with the overpriced Vitamin C tabs, etc. every single day. Plus, we took his meds from home, and they still tried to bill our insurance hundreds of dollars for meds we did not receive, or meds we brought from home.

Not sure if this would be considered body wipes or not, but with my sections, I loved having flushable wipes. Since it can get kinda hard to make sure you got it all clean lol, the wipes made me feel like "Yup, all clean".

This is a wonderful thread! Thanks to all who have contributed to the "post-op, handy-dandy survival kit". You sure have made my life a lot easier. I see my surgeons on Tuesday the 3rd of January, 2012. All of my pre-op testing is completed and I believe that a surgery date will be set at that time. I know they require you to be on a clear liquid diet for one week prior to the surgery, does that mean I can have like SF Jello? MIO (water additive with no sugars)? That sort of thing? Anyone? Your help will be greatly appreciated! Dancing_biggrin.gif

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
