Eating and Drinking Too Much

Recommended Posts

I feel like I am. Well, not eating too much because I can't really since I still feel pretty nauseous, but I feel like I'm drinking too much. I feel like I drink all day and am never full. I know the purpose of drinking is not to be full, but I would think that if my stomach is so much smaller, I should only be able to drink a small amount at a time. But really, I can drink a cup of tea the same way I did before being sleeved. I don't have to sip it for 20+ minutes.

Does any of this make sense? Does anyone else feel like this?

Hi fleur

My nutritionist said that as the swelling goes down in our pouches, we will be able to drink more liquids.

I wouldn't stress about it, consider yourself super grateful, sounds like your swelling went down quickly, when I was finally able to drink more normally nothing could have made me happier and I was finally fully hydrated! Good for you, your weight loss is looking great!

Nina: LOL. Don't be jealous. I'm sure it's due to my nausea that I've lost a little more. I'm not even exaggerating when I say for about a week, I ate 3 crackers a day. And that's it. I'm finally starting to get over it. I actually managed to finish a 4oz cottage cheese today. Yay!

Wannalise: Thanks! I didn't even think about it as my swelling is going down; I just assumed I was failing already.

See how we do this to ourselves? First thing we think of is we are failing. :( Get out of that mindset and think positively!

I'm so glad to hear you had a cottage cheese. I know you were suffering big time with the nausea. I can't quite easily get all my fluids in yet, so I'm looking forward to that!!

I agree with Annalise, plus since our stomachs are smaller, and not all stretched out, it's a liquids in, liquids out concept. Since we have a normal functioning stomach with a pyloric valve, and NOT a pouch like RNY or band patients, the liquids aren't going to hang out in the sleeve. We drink, it slides down, hits the pyloric valve and empties into the intestines. That is why so many people experience zero full signal on liquids post-op. It's just not physically possible for liquids to stay in long. Enjoy the not sipping, and keep pumping in fluids, it helps flush the fat and Water weight ! ! !

Tiff, if we are sipping/drinking and feel a weird feeling in there, that means we are not fully healed right? And it's not just going in and straight out. Because I DO feel full and uncomfortable sometimes if I drink too fast or too much.

If you're experiencing discomfort with drinking, it could be spasms from your healing tummy. Scientifically, once the fluids go in, they hit the pyloric valve and start emptying into the intestines. If you take a big drink, and your stomach is still swollen, this process will take a few more minutes to process. This is the main reason for waiting at least 30 minutes after eating to start drinking. If you start drinking too soon, or drink with your meals, it essentially flushes the food through faster than the normal digestion process, and it can and will leave your stomach empty. Plus, if you ever happen to accidentally take a drink(not a tiny sip) with your meal, it's typically uncomfortable early post-op. I can now eat and sip simultaneously without discomfort, and it allows me to eat more food. It's a way to eat around the sleeve. I can also drink warm tea or have some Soup before I eat and those 2 tricks allow me to get in more protein/food. I'm not advocating this behavior, but for me to hit my calorie and Protein goals so I do not lose anymore weight, I sometimes I have to "cheat" to get in more food. If I stick to all the "sleeve rules" I drop weight like crazy so for me, and trying to maintain my current weight, I have to do things differently.

If you're still swollen, and your body is trying to heal, when you take a big drink or drink too much then logically the stomach needs some time to get the fluids out.

I'm not saying that everyone is the same, but if she isn't having the same issues, feeling full and uncomfortable with big drinks, the reasoning behind her not feeling full is because the liquids in, liquids out concept.

Thanks! I figured this as much. I am big on rushing this.. I keep wanting to think I am done healing and reading to tackle this weight loss full force, but I need to listen to my body. I'm obviously still healing and can feel that. So I will take it easy and chill out! lol!

Thanks again for sharing your endless knowledge!!!

I can almost take the same size drinks as I could preop. Infact the only time I feel pain is if I'm drinking and I think "OMG I just had surgery that was too big a drink" then I feel pain but the other 2/3 of the cup when I forgot I was postop goes down fine. It's a lot easier with warm drinks so I'm drinking Decaf coffee with sugar free Syrup in it.

I had little trouble drinking after surgery. I was afraid that if drinking dindn't hurt that meant that I didn't have proper restriction and without proper restriction, I would fail, etc., etc. I think these fears are normal but unfounded.

I am now 4 months out and 10 lbs from goal. Hang in there Fleur de lis, you're doing fine.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
