Is it true? No Drinking From A straw

Recommended Posts

I heard that after the surgery you are not allowed to drink from a straw. Is it true? Please say it aint so.:biggrin0: I am a faithful straw drinker and I dont know how I am going to be able to break that habit.

It is true! :) I just got done from my final visit with the surgeon, blood work, egk, etc, and yes they said no straws. I was shocked too. I'm sorry. They said it causes air bubbles in your small tummy and will stretch your little stomach. Good luck! :biggrin0:

I've heard both "no drinking from a straw!" and "a straw may make drinking easier." LOL. I don't seem to notice any difference whether I'm drinking with one or without.

My post-op instructions actually encouraged drinking through a straw. One more thing that everyone gets different information on, but I haven't had any problems drinking through a straw.

its funny that I read this today at Dr's office his nurse and him got into a debate about it. Because on my instructions home it said no straws and he said that was crazy. He said you get more air in by mouth than straw. And of course she did not agree.. did that help.lol

My pre op instructions said no straws too. The last support group I went to was hosted by three ladies that all have had one of the procedures(lap Band, Sleeve and or Gastric Y) done and they all drink out of straws and have had no trouble. The doctor said it would put air in your stomach therefore you have less room to put the nutrients in there you really need.

Some surgeons/programs say "no" others give their patients straws in the hospital immediately post-op.

For me, I could not sip through a straw immediately post-op, but I know others that had zero problems and it made getting in their liquids much easier. I was just super gassy, and sipping through a straw caused a bubble that I couldn't burp out, and it just had to escape on it's own. It didn't keep me from eating or drinking any more than usual. It was a little uncomfortable. A couple of months post-op straws were absolutely fabulous, and I drink out of a straw all the time now.

My nut instructions said no straw ... woke up in recovery and a straw was placed in my mouth. Go figure!

I found the straw to be a lifesaver in getting in my liquids early out. I've had no issues with gas build-up & my restriction is great at 7+ months.

But, that is my experience. Everyone should talk with their surgeon and follow that advice.

OK in my options classes we were told no straws and I just had my post op appt yesterday and my surgeon said OK to use a straw now, go figure. So I would say don't use a straw initially but then gradually move to using one (I guess LoL).

Everything Dr. Aceves gave me in the hospital came with a straw.

I have used a straw from day one, I actually drink more when I use a straw. Straws are necessary in my world!

My post op instructions didn't mention straws at all so I asked at my two week followup. The nurse said it depends on the person and it's ok to give it a try. I waited another week or so to try a straw. My first few sips were a little wierd, but I soon discovered that I drink a lot better with them. I can also drink faster without any discomfort. I soon realized that I was getting more air in when I drink without a straw as one person's doctor said. I wish I had tried it sooner and maybe I wouldn't have gotten dehydrated. I use them with almost every drink now.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
