Kaiser Richmond/kaiser South San Francisco Gastric Sleeve Brothers And Sisters!

Recommended Posts

At my orientation, I weighed in at 280.7. Dr. Park told me I need to get down to 260. I just did my sleep last week, and it was pretty easy. I had to sleep with a little gizmo on my finger, and then took it in to the hospital the next day. Now all I need to do it finish losing the weight! Only 4.3 lbs to go.

Wow, that's great! I have the official orientation in South San Francisco next week, and I'm definitely curious at how much weight they will tell me to lose.

Hey Chrissy,

I'm from Sac and just like you--my surgeon is Dr. Im.

I will be having it done on Nov 1st...YA, 12 days to go....

I have met 3 other people here on these forums who are also from sac.

We all need to hook up....

I just had my surgery at So. SF with Dr. Alami. I had the newer procedure where they have only 2 incision sites. Anyway, I went to the psych appt and later got an appt with Dr. Alami. I thought he would tell me to loose x amount of weight. But, because I had been really faithful with the pre diet and RECORDED everything, he gave me my surgery date right away. I had only lost about 12 pounds.

It isn't a hard and fast rule that you must loose so much weight. It has to do with whether the operation can be done safely on you and whether you can follow the pre op diet. Each person is different.

Oh, that's a good idea, I'll make sure to record everything! Congratulations on your surgery! How are you feeling?

Hugsamber- Don't worry about your age and the Sleeve, I had mine done with Dr. Chu in May and I am 26. I asked her the same question about the longevity of the Sleeve and she said not to be worried.

Lisa- you will be ok. I know it sucks to wait, but better safe then sorry, and at least he didn't say no all together right?! Good luck!

Sherrie- Sad to see you go but good luck! Do what is best for you!

PS. There is plenty of long term information on the partial removal of the stomach for those who have had ulcers or cancer, which is similar to the VSG.

I just wanted to let everyone know I was sleeved on Wednesday, Oct. 20. It was pretty rough as I think I forgot to prepare myself for the pain part! For people who wonder if they are too old, I'll be 54 next month, and came through, albeit probably more slowly than some of you youngsters!

I would love to have the surgery with just two incisions, but when I spoke with Dr. Baggs a couple of weeks ago he said the Richmond was not doing the two incision thing. That because they were still perfecting performing the sleeve he does not think that they should be trying a more complicated way yet (they have only been doing the sleeve for the last year or so). Plus he said that if there were only two incisions they would be way bigger than the 5 small ones. I think that it is so odd how every Kaiser is different. Either way I am anxiously awaiting my psych appt on 11/12. I still have 2 pounds to lose. To be honest I have been eating kind of bad (but not nearly as much or as bad as before I started the pre-op). So I have to really get my mind set now. I think that because my surgeon appt and my psych appt were a month apart and I only had to lose 4 pounds I slacked! I am hoping that the psych appt will go smoothly and that I will get my appt with the Case Manager a few weeks after. I wish it would all go faster!!! Sorry for the rambling!

Congrats Karen on getting sleeved! Hopefully I will be joining you soon!

Congrats Mommy!!! I hope you get an appointment with the Case Manager quickly! Keep us updated. I am curious on how long it will take to get the Case Manager appt! I am at my goal weight but waiting for 11/12 for my psych appt before I can do anything else. The wait is driving me crazy!!! A sleeve for Christmas sounds like a wonderful gift!!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
