Beans?

Anyone eating baked beans? I know they are high in sugars, a 1/2 cup of Bush's have 11 sugars but 6 protiens. Calorie-Count.com gives them and A but I am worried they will be too sweet and maybe too much Fiber so early.

OO baked Beans felt like a sugary treat after all the bland food I ate. I only ate a few teaspoons though to make sure I could eat it. Good luck!

Hi everyone! Guess what, I am alive!

I had a panic attack that woke me up the night before my surgery, and I almost changed my mind, but it's done now!

Yesterday I felt like I had been run over by a Mack truck, then by last night a 4 wheel drive, now today just a car ;) Except after hauling my luggage up my port site is hurting again. Oh well, tomorrow just a bike?

I haven't had much gas pain yet, just pain at the port site. I also keep getting these feelings like my stomach is cramping up, but they go away about as fast as they come.

I had a pretty big hernia Dr. Zapata said, but he fixed that too.

Anyway, I'm hoping your toe is feeling better BGP. I know the feeling when you've got all the science to back something up but people don't want to believe it- that's poopy :D

Anyway, going to go lay down and see if i can't make my side feel better. Talk to all of you later tonight!

I'm tired of Soup....soup .... Soup

Oh Matthew - AMEN - not only am I tired of soup but I am hungry! I am six days out and can't wait until I can have some applesauce - or anything besides soup and juice and Protein shakes etc etc etc. Are you hungry? And of course I had to teach a seminar this morning and someone walked in with Krispy Kreme donuts - ouch, that hurt. Anyway, I'm with you on the soup but I keep telling myself in six months or a year it will be soooooo worth it!

Anybody drinking anything that really fills you up? Any ideas? I need HELP!!

Hey guys! I was finally banded on 7/24 and I am having some concerns. I am having terrible pain at the port site and swelling to the point where I really can't wear underwear or pants that is is so uncomfortable. Also I have periods of feeling like i am going to pass out, i get very flushed and sweaty and clamy. I just want to see if this is normal. I tried to go back to work today for 3 hours and couldn't do it. I am just scared. I am having second thoughts about the band!!! Please give me advice!!!

Well I am 3 weeks out, and just entering my 4th week. I feel GREAT! I can eat anything and everything so i need a fill. I am also going to go on a pretty strict Soup diet again. I miss my soup diet. LOL I get to start some light exercise tonight. I am going to do some shadow boxing and then do an hour long walk by my self. The dog is still at the vets and we pick him up on friday. I feel I should be well healed by then to handle a dog jumping up and around me.

I can't wait for a fill. I have to wait this week and next week to get the fill, but i am excited about it and I hope that it makes a difference for me.

Oh Trish, I feel your pain

It was a good 2 weeks before I could go back to work. I am not almost 4 weeks out and just starting to feel normal. Just make sure you are not scared to eat ( I was and I became faint and constipated). and drink your Water and Protein shakes! The pain will go away- faster with meds hehe and you should feel better soon. Remember- you just had MAJOR surgery and its gonna be painful.

Now if your port area is red and inflamed and burning, I'd see the doc...

oh and I just wore boxer briefs for about 2 weeks! and I wouldn't put my shirt over my belly- I hiked it up and held it up under my boobs for 2 weeks (my dad was so pissed lol)

Trish this doesn't sound normal to me. Im not having any of those symptoms. It might be nothing serious but I wouldn't mess around. I think you should call your doctor.

Trish,

The first question that I have for you is whether you are getting enough fluids and Protein in during this healing process? Next, I'm wondering if it's a fluctuation of your blood sugar that is doing this. I probably would assess this and make sure you are drinking enough fluids, getting in 60-70 grams of Protein, and see how you do. I would also call the doctor's office and let them know how you are feeling. Do you have a slight fever?

You might want to take your temperature. I'm no expert and just got banded on July 28, but I am feeling pretty good. I do mix in protein at least 3x a day with my liquids and am trying to drink 64 oz. min. of Water each day. I don't always get in the whole 64 oz., but pretty close.

Hope this helps you out and let us know how you are doing.

Trish,

I echo the above sentiments - I was banded on the 26th and I am not in "terrible" pain. I am uncomfortable - but certainly not terrible. You need to be watching closely for signs of infection - which are swelling, redness, skin feeling hot at the site, and fever. If You are just swollen and puffy that is one thing, but that plus any of the other signs are reason for concern. Also the pain should be worse on days 2 and 3 after the surgery - then gradually get better. If it isn't going that direction, you may have a problem.

Also, the feeling light headed or sweaty or clammy sounds alot like dumping syndrome, which is rare in lap pts but common with the RNY bypass. It would occur if you had taken in too much sugar or fat too quickly. It is your bodies way of trying to compensate and it is sort of like a sinking spell + hot flash. But if you aren't taking in a lot of sugar or fat at once, this shouldn't happen.

I encourage you to call your surgeon or your dietician to discuss if it doesn't get better. Do you do anything strenuous at work? This is major surgery and some people's bodies heal more quickly than others, but be on the look out for potential problems just to be safe.

I don't know about you but where I live it is 103 degrees today so that will make anyone feel terrible! Stay hydrated and watch your sodium intake as well.

Hope you feel better soon and keep us up to date! I hope my nursing school knowledge is helpful (I try to cure everyone already and I still have year before I graduate!)

There are lots of people praying for you - keep in touch!

Marie

Hi Trish! first of all, Hang In There! I agree with Mary, check your Fluid intake and your Protein. are you keeping a journal of food and exercise? i just sent off an email to my center's dietician with a boatload of questions. I feel like i cant read my own body anymore and maybe this is just an adjustment process. The thing that bothers me is our incision pan. mine is minimal and mostly at nite/eve with some bloating, which my nurse said may happen during the healing process. take your temp and call your doctor PRONTO! keep posting

ok ok....

seems like we have a good group of "newbies" July banders

I have high hopes of this working out for me (and you all) but I still worry about my history of losing weight, gaining it back, losing weight.... and so on.... I'm guessing I may have lost and gained several people by now.

My mind is starting to play tricks on me.... like... "hey matt, isn't this the time you eat potato chips?" "hey matt, remember mcdonalds...mmmmmmm big macs"

obviously I'll need to retrain myself on eating habits.... but dang.....*sobs* I sooo sooooooo likey sour cream and onion potato chips!

then there is the burden of the "pressure" that I feel family is adding to me. I mean, they are watching to see how I do. My dad offered to pay for my brothers banding if I am successfull. (which I'm not complaining, however I saved it all by myself for 3 years)

Then, being so far from my doc, what happens if I mess up and have a slippage of the band? hmmmm mo money mo money

fills, fills, fills, that's the rub isn't it..... you think you are done paying ... then the fills.... sure... I have free fills from my doc.... but I have to spend 400 for the flight to get there..... grumble grumble grumble

I WANT MAGIC DANGNABIT..... a automatic pill to lose all the weight I want without working to dang hard to do it

basically this was a complain session and worry session...

I'm happy I chose to be banded... and I made a life choice....

it's the unknown future that concerns me

what happens if I still have the band and turn 70 and start forgetting about it..... ooops... pb pb pb... *lol* I think to much!!

what are your worries? however crazy *s*

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
