Unfourtunatly, this is a bit controversial..but thoughts on consuming Marijuana PsOp?

I'm not looking for moral answers, so please spare me. We can discuss the legality of marijuana elsewhere. :tongue_smilie:

Anyway, has this surgery changed the way you consume cannabis? I'm wondering how much it influences the "munchies" and how soon you can start smoking again after surgery...Mind you, this is not a question you can ask your doctor, but hey.

I don't mean to sound rude here ...but it's difficult to address your post without responding to your first statement. You can't separate the issues. You are asking members of this forum, some of whom are medical professionals, how to incorporate illegal drugs into your rehabilitation.

You're doing this to get healthy, right? So...why would you even want to?? :tongue_smilie:

Yes, you CAN ask your doctor this, and you should. Doctors are trained to deal with discussions of recreational drugs, and are in fact going to be better at giving you "just the facts" minus the judgment.

I have recreationally used marijuana and believe it should be legalized. I don't use it anymore because I've grown out of it, but I think what you do to your body is your choice. It may be a foolish choice, but it's your choice.

I am NOT A DOCTOR, but from what I know, this surgery shouldn't interact with marijuana consumption at all, unless you're eating it (rather than smoking it). I would highly recommend waiting a good 6 months after surgery before you partake, however, because god only knows how the marijuana and other meds might interact. I would definitely not smoke anything (including cigarettes, but also marijuana) for a couple months after surgery, because compromised lung function & pneumonia is already a concern.

Also, I agree with others -- why on earth would you want to sabotage a perfectly good weight loss surgery with a drug that's best known for giving people the munchies?

I agree. Suck it up :lol0:(no pun intended) and ask your surgeon from a hypothetical perspective. If you insist on doing it, at least be sure you're not going to hurt yourself post-op.

I say ask your doctor. Most are pretty knowledgabe and not super judgmental. I havent heard this topic discussed much so I don't have any answers.

Interesting topic though... your probably not the only one that wants to know.

Thanks for your reply! I agree, that's partially why I wanted to ask. I'm sure there are others that have been curious to know.

Calva,

First of all hats off to you for asking what no one else would!

i actually heard it helps afterwards (a few weeks post op) in getting your appetite back, as far as anything else i dont know. Of course i am not promoting smoking pot just answering what i know!

Good luck to you!

Definitely discuss it with your surgeon, and your anesthesiologist.

It's my understanding that the smoke not the effects of pot, can slow down healing because our circulatory system restricts blood flow to the rest of our body when we inhale smoke into our lungs. The blood wants to go to the lungs more to help them recover.

I can't much on the actual munchies aspect of it. I did a quick google search, and found a variety of answers, there is an enormous thread on Lapbandtalk that talks about this, and there's a bunch of different personal stories. One point that was brought up in the thread is the coughing post surgery. That can cause more pain, and irritation on the stomach especially if you get any type of drainage from the anesthesia.

The band and the sleeve are different, but the effects of pot would probably be similar.

Here's the thread from lbt

i answered this question when someone else asked it. Why do you smoke your pot when you can eat it and get twice the high. Just bake it in some low carb

recipe and eat it when you are on full solids. Smoking is just bad for you any way you slice it. But ingesting it in food is great! I don't do it but I'm sure there are some great recipes online and you can make them low carb. Seaview

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
