Pre-Op Liquid Diet Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

My doc has me on a one week, low fat/low cal liquid diet. Oddly enough, they told me not to expect to lose weight :cry that it was just to shrink my liver. But, there is no way you could NOT lose weight on it.

Anyway, does anyone know what I SHOULD be losing on a one week low cal low fat LD???? What is reasonable??? Today is my 6th day and I have lost 8 lbs. Is that too little/too much???? I want to make sure my liver is shrunken properly.

Hey! I've lost 11 lbs on mine in about 11 days! I think you are doing great!:clap2:

I told my mom that my surgeon had better be very complimentary of my liver after going through two weeks of this liquid diet thing!:)

Can't wait til' Friday! ITS BAND TIME!!! Good Luck sister!

How much you will lose depends on your age, sex, weight and metabolism. My surgeon also required a one week pre-op liquid diet that averaged about 700-800 calories a day. The average weight loss in his patients for that week was 5-12 pounds but a lot of that "weight" is Water weight. As your surgeon stated, the purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver to make the surgery easier. Good luck!

Okay, so I'm at least on track for the average. I'm working SO hard at this. I haven't been cheating and my stomach won't quit growling. I can't beleive I've stuck to it this long!!! I feel like I'm in the home stretch. I just don't want to show up and have my doc say I should've lost 20 lbs by now and he can't do the surgery. Of course I'm fearing that they will cut me open and not put a band in. As long as I know I'm in line with what's to be expected, I'm good. I don't care about WL at this point for WL sake. I just want to make sure I'm on track and shrinking my liver.

8 pounds is excellent. My surgeon says that 5-10 pounds makes a huge difference when he does surgery... Excellent job!

I lost 10 pounds on my pre-op diet and that was a 10 day liquid diet as well.

My surgeon told me that my liver looked fabulous and he can always tell who has adhered to the diet and who hasn't. That sure gave me some motivation on those tough liquid days.

good luck to you!

Hey sisterfunkhaus,

I was on a liquid pre-op diet for 7 days and lost 8 pounds. I lost an additional 7 pounds during the post-op diet and, although I know people are right when they say there's a lot of Water weight loss which may come back when you start eating food again, it hasn't happened that way for me. I've been steadily losing in small increments since I began 'real' food again! So, definitely be happy about the liquid diet weight loss, your surgeon will be happy about it too - and there's no reason not to hope for that weight loss to be sustained post op! Here's to hoping! Cheers!

Good luck with your surgery and on your weight loss journey!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
