Effects of anesthesia

Never having been put under anesthesia before, I'm not sure of the side effects.

Since my surgery I have found that my sense of smell is so acute that things I found "unpleasant" before down right make me gag now. Is that normal?

Also, aside from the 2 nights in the hospital that I asked for a sleeping "pill" I have not been able to sleep more than one or two hours at time and when I do sleep I have the weirdest dreams.

I haven't had a restful night since I got home so tonight I am seriously considering a Tylenol PM or a benadryl. I think that is another reason I'm running out of steam quicker than normal.

Anyone else have these problems?

unisom is a very good sleeping pill i like it more than prescription stuff and it doesnt make you feel drugged up the next day

Thankfully, I'm back to sleeping on my own without the need for any medication at all ... which is the way I prefer it. Thank you for your input though -- may come in handy when my DF has his surgery in July.

Do you think that your difficulty with sleep has anything to do with psychological anxiety you had before surgery about not coming out from the anesthesia? I am basing that on my experience of initally not being able to intiate sleep after getting diagnosis of sleep apnea because a psychological fear of not waking up/dying-treated it with one session of hypnosis.

I don't think so, but anything is possible. I'm just so happy it only lasted about a week and that I only had to take liquid benadryl 2 nights to help dry up the excessive mucus. I sleep like the dead now and I'm so glad for it.
