The instructions given to me say: REMOVE ALL BODY JEWELRY. Gggggrrrrrrr!!! I have had quite a few surgeries before and no doctor has ever requested me to take mine off. I have a nose ring (that will probably be closed by the end of the surgery) and two other piercings.... Removing those is out of the question!!! Anyone else experience this or something TOTALLY different??

I removed all mine except the one in..ahem...an intimate area. And that's because I don't know how to lol. Your nose shouldn't close as long as you get it back in after surgery. Belly button ones stay open for a few days. Tongue stays open for weeks, sometimes years depending on how long you've had it.

No one has ever commented on the piercing I didn't take out. I wonder why! Lol!

Intimate area? Does your BF ever chip his teeth?

You could ask if you could use plastic studs.... it is probably because if some thing goes wrong they dont want to deal with the chance of not being able to do x-rays or something.

My Dr was ok with me putting in a plastic flexible nose stud like this...

I think the anesthesiologist is the one who had the concern but it didn't interfere with my airway at all so he was fine with it.

I have a nose and belly button ring. My nose I was able to put in a few hours later when I woke up and the belly button one I put in yesterday...1 week post op. I have had my belly button done though for years. I put some Vaseline on the tip and it went right in! but yes I had to take everything, everything out

The metal interferes with the machines, if you have implanted piercings as some people do those do not easily come out though there are some hospitals who I have seen them tell patients that they will remove them for them. I would speak with your Dr. about not touching the ones you don't think you will be able to take out so that you don't have someone in the hospital do it for you.

Good luck!

Potential complications with body jewelry: 1) If an emergency occurred and an MRI was warranted this is an absolute no no. Metal is forbidden in MRIs despite location (the machine is a huge magnet and the metal WILL come out), 2) some nose/oral jewelry can interfere w/ placing G-tubes and ET tubes to secure an airway. Last thing med professionals want to deal with is a secondary issue like a rip/bleeding or worse swallowing the object etc. 3) down below jewelry can interfere with placing a catheter and because scrubbing for sterility is required, again, risk for tears etc, 4) tummy jewelry potentially an issue with abdominal surgery (depends where the laproscopic incisions are placed (some go through the belly button for instance) etc. Lastly, body jewelry does harbor bacteria, and just like wearing makeup etc removing these objects will hopefully decrease risk of infection. Speak to your doc as to what is required and what he is comfortable leaving in. But these are the rationales.

I understand where you are coming from, hopefully you will be able to speak with the doctor beforehand personally and express why some can not be taken out and hopefully they will be able to address that with you! Hope all goes well! :D

Thank you for your comment! I went and got one for my nose today, HOWEVERRRRRR, I still have the two down below... I will ask them to remove it, before surgery tomorrow, I guess!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
