Increasing sodium

Recommended Posts

I've been having issue fainting when I stand up. It started after surgery. I've taken some knots to my noggin, which has been troublesome. After numerous tests the doctor determined it was low blood volume and that I need to increase my sodium intake. I am very happy that I only require about 900 to 1000 calories a day. I don't think I could physically add anymore food volume to my diet. I'm really happy with the healthy food choices I am making and I don't want to add processed food to my diet. Using extra table salt ruins the taste of my food. Has anyone else needed to increase their sodium intake? What are some ideas for increasing sodium in my diet without making unhealthy over processed food choices?

Low sodium is the same as low electrolytes. Your main concern should be what is causing this because it's not common. Have all your organ functions been tested? Are you vomiting or having diarrhea regularly? It's also (though rarely) caused by poor nutrition.

Your only real options to increase sodium is table salt or medication prescribed by your doctor. There are foods naturally higher in sodium too, like pickles and anchovies

If I were in your shoes, I'd press to find the cause of the problem.

Best wishes.

Maybe you could look up foods on the internet that contain more sodium naturally, like for instance celery is higher in sodium than you would think. Did they give you an amount of sodium that you would need a day? That would be helpful if they did. you could track it on .MFP.(my fitness pal.com)

I agree with Missy, you need to find the underlying cause. When I had this problem it was from not eating enough calories. Work with your doctor and a nutritionist to resolve these issues.

try sea salt or cook your food with salt added.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
