How to learn your full signal before it's to late?

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill a week ago & I have not figured out how to tell when I'm full until I'm in pain. I eat very slowly, chew very well, take small bites & all that. It takes me about 20-25 min to eat. I have been focusing on my stop signal & nothing noticeable has happened.

I either "sigh" or "hiccup". Also, make sure you're measuring everything. If you're eating the correct amount, you shouldn't reach the point of being in pain. I learned this lesson all to well

But to clarify, I don't always sigh or hiccup. So measure, chew chew and chew.

I agree, measure your food so you run less of a risk of accidentally over eating.

When you pause between bites, ask yourself "am I still hungry?" And if the answer is no you're done. Remember, when eating with the band eat until you're satisfied not full.

I will sometimes get a bit of a runny nose when I am up to my limit. Everyone is different. Listen to your body and always stop before feeling FULL, cause that will creep up on you.

I would get a runny nose as well. There are so may of them. I agree with the others. Measure. Don't eat until your" full". It the amount you measured then be done. Your soft stop may come and go and change with each fill.

Good luck.

After three fills my band isn't tight enough for me to get into much trouble if I eat past when I think I should stop. I know I've overeaten in the recent past, so I am very careful to count calories and Protein intake, and to stop when I have the slightest feeling of being full. I think everyone is a bit different, depending on where their band fill is at, and for other reasons.

I get the feeling I am going to choke so I sop I also have got the hiccups but mostley I feel like I am going to choke so I stop , but it took me 5 fills some people don't get fills and know the feeling and some have had a couple of fills or a few so just do what you think is best for you and yes measure ur food and REAlly chew till it's like mush and take your time eating , it's hard to do as we live in a fast pace world but take your time to eat. or drink and for me I don't drink but MAYBE take a small sip or 2 and not gulp or it will all come up and that is NOT a good feeling at all.

When everyone says to measure food is there a specific amount max per meal? My doctor gave me a calorie limit for the day but not for each meal.

I eat about 2oz of meat & maybe 1/2 cup if veggies if I can get my meat down.

What amount does your all docs suggest per meal?

Typically its 3/4 to 1 cup of food per meal, but check with your doctor.

This is a great post. I seem to stop myself but feel like I can eat more. I have had one fill of 3.5cc an I informed my dietitian & i've been scheduled for fill #2. I've never felt restrictions thus far. It will be 2 weeks since fill 1 on june 3rd & that's when fill 2 will be. Lord I hope I have restrictions cuz I can eat what I want (minus breads) without problems. I know when I go in the scale will say I've gained in 2 weeks even though I count calories & exercise.

The proper way to chew is to chew until you have almost nothing to swallow. After 15 or 20 minutes, if you have not finished your plate, leave it. That should be plenty of time to eat what your body needs. Remember, we are used to seeing portions that are waaaaay out of proper. We can he very healthy on almost no food, as long as it is nutrient rich. Just IMHO

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
