I'm confused about nutrition and what my nutritionist said?

Recommended Posts

this is what she sent me this morning when I told her I was losing hair and not getting enough Protein in my diet. : "As long a you are getting around 4-5 ounces of Protein daily, you are getting plenty! One ounce is equivolant to - 1 egg, 2tbsp Peanut Butter, 1/2 cup cottage cheese or Beans. "

I thought and maybe I'm wrong, still learning here, if I eat an egg for Breakfast, lunch maybe some shaved turkey wrapped in a piece of low fat provolone cheese (I would eat 2 of these) and for dinner I may have Wendy's small chili or 3/4 cup of cottage cheese or a baked chicken breast with veggies. according to my nutritionist I should only eat 1 oz of protein at each meal or there abouts. Am I doing this wrong? Maybe that is why I'm at so slow at losing. But I am losing hair like crazy. Someone that has been at this a lot longer than me please chime in!!!

i would weigh your protiens using a food scale if you can you will be suprized that 2-3oz. of protien actually looks like. I was told our plate should consist of 1/4 cup of veggies 1/4cup of startch and 2-3oz. of a protien. google the lapband plate if you want that should give you an idea.

No you're not doing it wrong. Granted I'm no doctor nor a nutritionist, but your nutritionist doesn't seem to be thorough enough. You need precise amounts not broad generalities.

Mine told me specifically I need a minimum of 60g of Protein daily. When I had this recent surgery, I was told I need at least 80g daily while I'm healing.

And 1oz per meal isn't enough. Most of us eat 3-4oz just for dinner alone.

thanks everyone, I will google lap band plate right now! Missy I knew you'd chime in and I could count on you girl! thx. That's what I'm talking about, I'm not eating that heavy tonight like a chicken breast but it is not uncommon for me to eat a chicken breast for lunch or dinner one or the other and that alone could be 4 oz. No my nutritionist is not thorough, she's young, fresh out of college and never has worked with bariatric patients before. As a matter of fact and I know some of you out there agree to disagree but she and my surgeon say I can have carbonated drinks, well I never was one addicted to cokes or any carbonated drink, thank goodness I always drank Water with crystal light, thats my addiction, so I never had to break a bad habit of that when I started my journey, but I've read too much on here to learn about bands slipping or errosion from carbonation so no thank you. My dr is young, he's good but young and I had all the confidence in the world in him and still do and love him to pieces and his practice but the nutritionist, we just differ on things. I stay confused when it comes to food choices! Maybe that's why I can't lose no more than what I've already lost. And in the past 4 days I've gained 4 lbs, now with that said, my ankles are swollen so some may be due to Fluid retention but still. This morning I had to be up and out by 8 to take my mom to a medical procedure and she got done at 11 so I didn't eat Breakfast, I was starving to say the least. By the time we left there we drove thru Chick-fil-A and I got a kids meal with 6 pc nugget, waffle fry and choc milk, we got home and I ate all nuggets, 1 waffle fry and ate 4 bites of slaw from my mom's meal and didn't drink the milk so that was my breakfast meal at 11:00. Then for afternoon time around 3:30 I was hungry and ate shaved turkey, not much, rolled in 1 1/2 pieces of low fat provolone cheese, small roll ups, about 3 1/2" long. I don't have a scale to weigh food on and need to get one but don't know what kind to buy. I am on a budget and can't afford much so I can't spend a lot on one. I figured for dinner in a bit I'd eat a little cottage cheese. That will be my day.

That's what I was told

I was also told that. Protein keeps you full and energized! I think the general deal is that there's about 7 grams of Protein per ounce of meat....

Good luck!

Oh! And I think for a visual aide, a deck of cards is about 3 ounces of meat :)

Protein is what keeps you full for the longest. What your nutritionist said sounds like for 1 meal, and you should have at least 3 a day. I try for 60-80 grams of protein.

I have a chart for Protein amounts based on height. I have to hit 79 grams based on my height of 5'3". If you want I can post yours. Also I was told by my hairdresser who has a customer who is a dietitian that eating complex carbs is what will help keep your hair from falling out. I don't have a clue but if nothing else is working maybe you could just make sure your getting enough and see what happens. Now my Doc says 75 grams of Protein and Nioxin Shampoo. I was told by my hairdresser that Biotin only helps the hair you have grow it does not grow hair itself. Just some thoughts. Good luck

~~~Stephanie
      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.
        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.
        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!
        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.
        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.
        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
