Top Doctor's Opinion re Revision options-Posted on Complications Forum

Recommended Posts

I am legitimately in the complications forum because, well, I have a complication with my band. I didn't read your initial post, OP as providing any real helpful information for someone who has had complications with the band, because it didn't say 'these are the things to consider when you have complications'. Instead it just kinda scolded anyone who chose the band (and in my case, who is choosing the band again), insinuated that they're choosing an inferior product (and I don't believe so), told them they were probably not going to be successful (which was not true at all for me), without providing context on the motivation behind your post.

So I posted because since we're talking anedoctal evidence, I am anecdoctally what a successful lapbander looks like. And one who has a complication, but will still choose the band given the new choices I have available. I would think me posting provided a nice balance to the discussion. And surely, balance is necessary, isn't it?

Ivy is not defending her friend. It is pretty obvious that Ivy is just another one of her aliases.

If you want to believe I'm an "alias" that's your perogative but I don't actually know anyone here.

Ok really? We're not quite that stupid.

There is no way you just join this forum and immediately run to only this thread.

I personally don't care if you're a friend, a sock puppet, or someone she knows online from somewhere else but please don't insult our intelligence. All it does it kill any smidgen credibility you may have had.

I have been a member here for a while but it's usually not worth the trouble to post. I keep getting messages from Alex, asking me to share my story but I have no interest in sharing something so personal with a group of people who will add insult to injury. I've read enough to know this. Good luck to you all. I hope your experiences are better than mine was.

When I first discovered I had a band complication, and posted about it, I got people coming and talking about similar things that had happened to them. To me, it would have been easy to then think "omg, this band is a disaster! It is a scam! Just look at all these people who are saying it didn't work!"

But I've been around a while now. There are LOTS of people for whom the band worked, and worked well, including me actually. It's not a scam, it is a procedure that has risks and the possibility of not working and the chance of you not losing the weight that you thought you would lose, but it doesn't make it ineffective or dangerous to the EVERYONE, as you seem to insinuate Ivy.

I read you saying tings like 'oh you'll find out I'm right' and I think hold the phone, Josephine, what about my success? What about my lack of complications until the leak? What about me? My experience is obviously better than yours, and I don't even know what yours is!

I have a friend who got the lapband on my recommendation and has lost a grand total of 20lbs, because she happily eats around the band. I have another who lost 100% of her excess body weight and kept it off for a year. I have one who had to have an emergency removal due to erosion due to nothing she herself did and suffered greatly. None of them blame the band. We all react differently and will behave differently with the band. But we're adults - we traded off the risks for the chance at losing the weight. For some, they don't lose, for others, they lose at the expense of developing other health issues, and yet for others, they lose and live happily ever after (and despite what anyone might have read in this complications forum, MANY people like that exist). You won't know which one you'll be until you have the surgery, whatever surgery that is. Yes there are risks, yes we should talk about the risks, but scare-mongering isn't the most helpful way to help people who have complications, imo. I think support for each other should take better forms than that.

Dr Keshishian is a bariatric surgeon who currently specializes in DS and VSG, but who formerly did all types of bariatric surgery. For those needing advice regarding revision options (those with major damage to stomach, esophagus, etc) he is the expert, patients and other surgeons rely upon for advice. In my original post, there were two links, relevant to those considering revision. It's really too bad that so many of you who responded in such a judgemental way, can't handle reading about serious complications without losing your collective mind! S**t happens, people need resources, I'm trying to help THEM. You don't need help? Fine...but don't stand in the way of those who do. It amazes me how the gang mentality rears its ugly head when there is mention that a Lapband might not be all its cracked up to be or, heaven forbid, actually CAUSE harm.

I got a horrific Dx yesterday. My esophagus showed NO activity at all on the manometry. Last month I was Dx with gastroparesis. I didn't have this problem 3 years ago. It's f'ing scary being me right now.

I really do understand why you feel so negative about the band; and your discomfort and pain are very real but as cognitive creatures we need to temper ourselves to remember our experiences are singular and no one person's experience (positive or negative) is representative of a universal experience that will be shared by all of our fellow members of humanity.

Frederic, you have quite a way with words :). I don't care if someone reads my posts and disagrees or thinks they're negative re bands, that's fine. It's the atmosphere of hostility on this site that is appalling to me. We're adults. We should be able to read posts that we may not agree with (read the entire post, links, etc) and not lose our minds about it, not become rude or hostile or tell the OP they should have worded it differently or clarified which forum they posted.

I've been polite. I've tried to share knowledge and experience. I've been attacked, vilified and stalked. I've remained polite. I'm only posting negative band experience on the complications forum and truly being supportive of those who have bands, have chosen to get bands and will only advise against it when the OP is asking openly for help deciding between band and sleeve. So what's the problem? The way I see it, it's that minds have been poisoned against me and there's not much I can do about it. I've tried.

I've been Dx with a terrible disorder that my band has caused. For those who think banding wont involve re-routing of the digestive system, think again. I could lose my entire esophagus.

This Board or forum is for EDUCATION & INFORMATION, The good bad or ugly.

The #1 lap band board has numerous Forums, what I have trouble understanding is Why anyone feels the need to defend the Band? If it works for you Fabulous. If not then POST away!!!

We don't know as individuals what others are here looking to learn,or what they were or weren't told prior to surgery.

I personally don't care how long anyone has been here if you have information, personal or factual if it pertains to me I'll decide.

But personal attacks because of information posted is deplorable.

KARMA IS TRULY A WONDERFUL THING

Wonderful post. Thank you. I love hearing the good, bad and ugly. It is the only way to learn everything. Being mean to others is awful, that is why we read the Enquirer.

So much passion and emotion on here. The truth of the matter is that all WLS is sad. Is sad that we would get to this point, to even have to think about it. (I understand there are a few with medical issues and could not hep their weight gain) but most of us was an addiction to food that developed from a bad relationship with food. My biggest wish right now is that ALL of us that have endured all this suffering invest as much energy into preventing this from happening to future generations. our children, and our children's children. (too late for my children) but I'm going to be a grandmother and I will be damn if that baby will be obese. I will do everything in my power to make sure that he has a healthy relationship with food from his birth. I'm 24 days post op, and its been an extremely difficult recovery because of nerve damage, one of the many risks of any surgery. My daughter is twenty-six years old and she had gastric bypass surgery ten years ago on her sixteenth birthday, a year ago she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis which has been linked to Vitamin deficiencies :( If God himself showed up and gave me the opportunity to change one thing in my life, I would change the way that I fed my children. (and I grew up in the system without any parents) And I would not change that given a chance. Please people lets prevent this from happening to future generations. enough is enough. :(

My parents fed me very healthily. We did not have a house full of junk food. We did not eat lots of Snacks. My Mum always cooked from scratch. We did not have soda except as an occasional treat. Probably the only thing "wrong" was that Dad made me finish everything on my plate , even things I hated such as peas.

The truth of the matter is that it does not take a lot to become overweight, then obese etc. We may have a vision of obese people stuffing themselves with candy and fries and for some that is probably true. But there are many people out there that got fat eating just a little bit more healthy food ( and some treats)than they needed and not moving enough.Plus I was always a bookworm, hated exercise since I was a child, and that also contributed to the problem.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
