differences in doctors orders

Recommended Posts

I was on a full liquid diet 2weeks pre-op, then full liquids for 2 weeks post-op. Mushies for weeks 3 & 4(which I am in now currently), then suppose to be on soft for weeks 5 &6, then regular diet week 7. Why are there some many differences in our doctors orders? I have read people eating regular on week 3 &4. What were some of your orders?

Well, everyone's body is different, Some doctors may error on the side of caution and move their patients through the phases slower so they don't develop complications. However, to answer your question specifically, my doc had me on two weeks of liquids pre-surgery, two weeks of liquids post-surgery, soft mushies for the third week. *IF* I could handle it, I was allowed to try solids on week 4, which I was able to do. I was eating solids by week four, probably because not having anything of substance to chew was driving me crazy by that point.

I've also noticed that here the US there seems to be a focus on telling people not to drink while eating, where it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue in other countries.

From what I read from the Lapband manufactures, my Dr goes by their recommendations. But I also think some do what they have seen work for their patients.

I hope everyone ignore others Drs orders and stick with their Drs orders. After all, thats your team.

I agree to stick to your own doctors orders but the reason I asked this question was so I can discuss it with my doctor when I go in to see him on the 8th.

Everyone is different and every doctor is different. Stick to your guidelines and you will do great!

My guidelines were:

*No pre op diet whatsoever. Was told to eat a light dinner the night before

*4 weeks of full liquid

*Regular diet as tolerated. No mushies or soft food

7 weeks is an awfully long time to get real food. But as others have said, follow your own drs recommendations...

your doctor has all of your medical records from the past and this might be what he feels is in you best interest or like other post they give you the one that they see the best results with.

yeah, its crazy at how different they are (some pre op diets, some not) etc. but while I cant say why they differ so (considering its the same surgery) I can only recommend going by what your specific doctor says. I have asked mine about things I have read on this forum. he shook his head mostly at the (wild assumptions and the blatant noncompliance some so openly admit to) but that is them. anyhow, I do think it is strange..oh well, it is what it is .

Mine seems to be the most liberal. No pre-op diet, full liquid first week, mushies second week and start soft diet week 3. And, first fill week 3!

Mine was:

No pre-op diet except liquids the day before

Three weeks of full liquids

One week purée

One week of soft food

Then regular bariatric diet

That three weeks was hard, but many had it even harder!

My doc is pretty conservative. 2 weeks Optifast only pre-op, 2 weeks Clear Liquids post-op then 2 weeks full liquids, 2 weeks pureed, 2 weeks soft, then regular food as tolerated. "As tolerated?!" By then I'm going to ****** up roadkill and BBQ it!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
