So I got a letter in the mail today from my doctor’s office that said I was Vitamin D deficient, and I need to get a supplement. They sent a prescription with it but I cannot read it, lol. I am not sure I insurance will cover a prescription for a vitamin.

So, I guess I am asking if anyone else take a supplement for Calcium and V/D? IF so what is the best for after being banded? Surgery date is the 17th.

BTW, I do plan to ask them when I get to the hospital. I will talk to them then about it but just wanted to hear form the LBT community, women in particular.

If you are seriously Vit D deficient then they have prescribed a large dose that should be available with insurance. I would ask by pharmacist. The amount you need may not be available over the counter.

I have MS so I take a very large dose of Vitamin D daily- 5000iu. (the recommended dose for a "normal" person is only 200-600iu per day)

I buy it at the grocery store. Very often I find it on sale buy one, get one free. I pay about $10 for a bottle of 60.

Find out what the dosage is your doctor is recommending and simply compare the OTC price to the prescription price. I found it to be cheaper OTC and neurologist (prescribing doctor) said there's no difference between the two.

That's about twice the daily recommended amount for a healthy person, but yours is low, so it makes sense and sounds right.

You can easily find that OTC, btw. Probably cheaper than what I pay too because it's a smaller dose than I take.

It's probably right. At one time I was Vit D deficient and they gave me a massive dose at the doctor's office and then I had to take a huge dose either every couple of days or once a week. I can't remember. Since the surgery I have been taking liquid Vit D/Calcium B12 and a joint supplement plus my chewable bariatric daily vitamin.

I purchase mine from CVS or GNC. I like the fruit chewables, they remind me of Starburst fruit chews. I have taken vitamins since being banded.

I take calcium + d 600/400mg twice a day, and Vitamin d 50,000 units once a week because I'm severely deficient

They are not expensive to buy out of pocket if ur insurance won't cover. I would get it filled if I was you.

Insurance covered the 50,000 unit once a week Vitamin D prescribed for me, my daughter and my teenaged son, as we were all deficient. Wearing sunscreen which we do (my son is very fair and I make him wear it or a hat most times) blocks vit D and can result in deficiency.

Since banding, I have been taking Centrum chewables in orange flavor. I wish I'd found them earlier. I also use Kirkland (Costco) calcium chews which have Vit D but I don't really like the flavor so I may order lemon from Bariatric source.

My D was low but not as bad as to need the prescription level. The good thing about them is that it's once a week for the 50,000 unit so I mark it on the calendar and check it off each week.

I guess I'll have blood work six months out and reassess at that time.

I just had to get a Vitamin D prescription filled this week - my level is 14 and my surgeon wants me at 35, whatever that means. My insurance covered it, although it was more expensive than the pain and anti-nausea meds I filled to get ready for surgery on Tuesday - the pain and anti-nausea were about $7 a bottle and the Vitamin D was about $11 with insurance (I was to say it was $25 without). I take it once a week; I think it's the 50,000 dose.

For after surgery, I bought liquids *and* a pill crusher - I didn't want to risk something getting stuck. I have a liquid multi, a liquid calcium+D, and a liquid omega-3 that comes in little honey-sized packets. I even got liquid Tylenol (and not just the kids' version!).
