Knee replacement

Recommended Posts

Lost 80 pounds first 7 months. Knee went out doctor says I need a partial knee replacement. I'm in pain with every step. I need to exercise, but not sure what I can do now. I feel great, motivated, just in pain. Hoping getting more weight off (still need to loose 100) will ease my knee pain. I'm not ready for a knee replacement. Arthritis picked a lovely time to show up. Just looking for suggestions.

I've thought about a stationary. I did go to therapy for a while they put me on one for ten minutes. Just need to see if I can try one before I buy one. Then possibly graduate to an actual bike. I did that a little in college. I'd forgot about that. I suppose not everyone is made to run? Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't run, but have been cycling for about 9 months now and I love it! I got a trainer for indoors during the bad weather/winter, so I wouldn't have any excuse. I started out not able to go but a couple miles at a time, now I have done 50 miles and plan on getting up to a 100 mile ride. Im lucky to have a very good amount of Paved trails in my county. Its fun to get out and ride.

i had a partial knee replacement in 2007 . my luck it didnt work out because it came loose or didnt really hole ( the bone glue they used ) so i just had the partial revised to a total knee in october 2012.. I LOVE IT ... ITS TOTALLY PAIN FREE AS FAR AS THE ACTUAL KNE GOES . its just the long term of my nerves & muscles healing. i am really hopeful that this knee replacement is going to work out . i hope your knee replacement works out well . keep me posted

I can't speak to a partial, but I have had two total knee replacements, 7 years apart. My only regret is I waited so long on the first one (First one in 2003). They gave me my life back.

Hi Cyndyann,

I am really concerned about the 'partial' knee replacement, only because as we get older, the more active we are, arthritis sets in, you possibly could be subjected to another surgery on that same knee.

I had a total hip replaced in my very early 40's, my other hip will need to be replaced as well but I need to get this weight off to do it. I had no choice in my matter when getting the hip replaced, both my hips are degenerative, and my femur head was completely gone and the femur bone was actaully rubbing chips of bone off of my pelvis, I was really messed up. Arthritis is no joke!

Can you talk to you ortho about what are the chances that you will need a total knee replaced on that same knee? talk about other alternatives, how bad is the arthritis once a partial knee is put in. If he/she says there are good chances you will knee a total knee done in your future, I would deff go with a total knee at first. Why suffer down the road, as I was told more surgeries on the same joints is the worse!! I know it even scares me today to think how long my new hip will actually last, ya know?

Best of luck to you,

I've had both knees replaced. Before replacement I was in the same boat. I tried swimming first, for some reason my knee would feel like it was out of joint or something afterwards. I don't know if it was the buoyancy or what, but that happened twice before I gave that exercise up. Stationary bike seemed to work best for me. Sometimes had to pass on a day because knee was clicking with each turn of the pedal, next day might be fine. One piece of advice though, I did and still do, rub a generous portion of deep heating rub on my knee before I begin any workout. Makes a world of difference, even with artificial knees. My right one has been scoped since the replacement because arthritis has developed under the plastic kneecap. Go figure..right! Good luck with the knees though!

I have a patella that slides out of its grooves now and then, and even when the patella is in place the knee gets achy sometimes from the exercise. Putting some cream on before working out sounds like a great idea! Thanks!

To the original poster: how about Water aerobics? They're often recommended for people with joint problems.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
