Getting in ENOUGH calories?

Recommended Posts

I know enough about nutrition and my body to know that I am NOT getting enough calories. I am only a little over a week banded so I am hoping it's that, but even with my shakes (1.5-2 a day) and my other small meal, I know it's not enough. BUt I'm NOT hungry at all. I am not getting in the full ounces of Water either, but I am trying. Before the band I drank like 2L of water a day so I should be back to that in no time.

I go back to my personal trainer on Monday (only doing some light arms--not chancing any problems and okayed by doc) and know that even slight exertion isn't going to sit well with me taking in no more than like 600 calories.

Did anyone else have this problem? Is it just because I am so newly banded and healing? Hopefully that's it and I'm just overthinking it.

Thanks!

That is not unusual being only a week post op. Try to stay hydrated and as the swelling goes down your apatite will return. If you are having trouble drinking I would suggest you let your doctors office know.

Good luck to you.

I agree I think my intake was about 500 or so but its been so long ago, however I would skip any kind of work out until you are eating enough calories. Even if it is arms only you are still expending energy that you are not getting in.

It's not unusual the first few weeks not to be getting enough calories... Just make sure you are drinking lots of Water while i am glad your dr approved the personal trainer.....consider it may be still early on for that so go easy.

Good luck!

I'm 5 days post op and averaging 500 calories a day, I feel good and am not hungry. My doctors told me not to worry about the count of calories but to make sure I'm getting at least 60 grams of Protein per day and plenty of Water.< /p>

Yeah most people Dont get in the calories they need. When youre swelling goes down your appetite will increase and it will make it easier. Just make sure u are getting plenty of fluids!

Evvery surgeon is different but most likely the first few days you will be on Clear liquids hen progress to Protein shakes for a week or so them on to mushy foods then soft and finally solids. So people are on shakes for 2 weeks and Dont have to go thru each stage. U should call them and found out so can get what u need before the surgery! Are u not on a pre op diet either?

I had no preop diet before my surgery. I did have a 2 day Water only fast though. I got all my nutrition guidelines at my final pre-op appointment before surgery. Today is my 6th day post-op. I'm on a completely liquid diet of Protein shakes, Water, skim milk, soy/almond milk, sugar free Popsicles and Jello, and low sodium beef and chicken broth,

Thanks for your info. My final appointment is on the 7th Jan and the op is on the 8th.

I started my pre-op diet if Protein shakes and a cup of veggies, but my doctor did not tell me to do this, I just thought it would be a good idea. I have called his office and emailed him, but he is still on holidays.

Not really sure what to do.

Before my surgery I got paper work from the nutritionist and it has sample menus. The first two weeks says about 500-600 calories so I think you are doing great. It doesn't say to add calories (just grams of protein) but it balances out to a range of 500-600 calories. Then I went in for a meeting and she explained it's low compared to what most people eat but it's right for newly banded patients.

I am just over 2 months post op. and I avg about 1500 calories a day. Days 1-7 post op I was on Clear Liquids and Protein Shakes. I got around 500 cal a day. Days 7-30 mushies. After a month I was clear to cautiously eat what I wanted except for fresh veggies. That was really hard as I am a salad girl. Honestly for a month I lived off of Juanita's tortilla chips, fat free sour cream and tomatoes lol. I had a hiatal hernia so I had some swelling still. It seemed only crunchy things would go down. Now that I am two months post op I eat whatever I want. I have found that some things don't work. I don't eat Pasta, rice, most breads unless toasted, and some meats. On dec 21st I had my first salad and it was AWESOME! Lol. I've been eating salad ever since. If I drink a Protein Shake in the morning and have meat on my salad I have adequate Protein for the day, but no protein shake and I seriously lack in the protein department. I am carb cycling now. On day 2 and I have already lost 3 lbs. good luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
