How Long Does The Surgery Take?

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious, how long does the procedure take? I can't remember what the doctor said.

Surgery is an hour, but 30 mins set up and 30 recovery. Least that's how mine was.

I was on the table at 8am, remember asking the recovery nurse the time at 10:20 and home by 11:30. Think the actual surgery was about 1hr-1hr15m. I was on the operating table for a bit while they did the IV and hooked me up to the monitors.

I went to the OR at 1:15 I was in recovery by 2:30 and that was with the prep in the OR once I got there. I think it depends on the surgeon, how many he has done, and other things. He said it took him 45 minutes from start to finish.

They quoted me 1 hour for the lapband only surgery, but I ended up being over 2 hours since he fixed my hiatal hernia (had no clue I had it, you sign a waiver that consents he can fix it while in there doing lapband) and got the lapband at the same time.

My surgeon jokes that any surgery lasting longer than 15 mins, he's bored! It would depend on what he finds when he is in there. My surgey was pretty normal, and I would say that with the prep and everything, I was about 3 hrs from prep to waking up. My son, was in surgery, however, for approx 2 hrs, when the surgeon discovered that he had organs moved around due to an accident as a teenager. So, the surgeon fixed his organs. But, he was out of surgery and in recovery and home from the hospital in about 6 hours total. Not sure if that helps. I was trying to say, it depends on what happens when he is doing the surgery! karen

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
