Painful Walking. How Do You Do It ?!

Recommended Posts

Yeah' date=' I was surprised he did the replacements, and at my age. But I couldn't walk and my osteoarthritis put me at bone on bone. I tried all the various shots, physical therapy pre-surgey and meds. Nothing was working. Now I have just changed from one type of pain and disability for another.

The YMCA costs 540.00 a year, and I don't have that. But it's my goal, believe me! I was going to switch to the Sleeve, to lose weight quicker (helping my knees out), but I won't do it. I like my band. Slow and steady wins the race in the lapband's case because you change you in that time. If I ever have to lose the band, I'll have at least learned how not to live in that time. Win/Win![/quote']

So what about your eating plan can be modified to accelerate your weight loss? Losing 75 lb has made my knee pain much better (I had most cartilage removed 7 yrs ago, have a chondral lesion 15x15 mm on my femur with marrow edema). However, I'm in a viscious circle, increased activity = increased pain...need the knee replaced. I cannot do cycling because of my SI joint (it dislocates). My only way to lose with my band was through eating no white/processed carbs, since I cannot exercise. You won't lose faster with the sleeve...you might consider DS as a revision type, that will take the weight off fast and permanently. Good luck to you!

My lapband saved me from knee replacement. My doc recommended stationary bike to take the weight off my knees. Perhaps that could work for you. But even if it is just walking inside for now, do it. We believe in you!

Nini......boy, reading your description of the state of your body (parts) reads like a medical journal. Some of it was French to me. But I get the jist. I'm not willing to try any other WLS, I prefer to work with what I've got.

I'm on a high Protein, low (bad) carb, reletively low fat, no processed flours, sugars or foods, diet. I am doing pretty well, but I'm sure there's room for improvement! I'm seeing my NUT today, after I VOTE, to tinker with my plan. I have .05cc in a 10cc band, and want more of a fill but I don't have an appointment for that until next month. I started walking a block a day, on top of my everyday walking. So, the weight loss "should" pick up.

I can't cycle because my knees won't fully rotate. I really wish I could go back for more physical therapy, but I hit the insurance cap months ago. I might try to pick it back up when the cap goes back to zero on January 1st. IDK.

Thanks for helping me out! :)

Congrats that you have begun walking. Like Mis73, Floridays and CG have experienced that it will improve and you have to start somewhere. Good for you!!!!

I know it costs a lot to join a gym and walking is great exercise in and of itself. If you are still interested in the pool, perhaps you could check your local hospital or Y to see if they have classes for Aquacizing. It is much less expensive to pay for classes than joining the gym. My local hospital (and Y) offer very inexpensive aquacizing classes that many bariatric patients have raved about. Just thinking that may be another option for you since you seem to enjoy that.

If you have Insurance, many plans will pay for a gym membership, for medical reasons. Medicare does too. My neuro really likes the Water exercise to when weight bearing is an issue. I must say this is an inspiring thread for ME TO! THanks for posting it, and all the responses. Sandy

PS- I have no excuse. Live in Florida, own a pool and still don t . Its just so painful with my fibro flaring as it has been for some time! Barometer bouncing up and down KILLS ME!!! N I moved to Florida due to the fibro! Go figure. It is not as bad as the North tho, I can say that, on the pain I mean. But, when Im closer to my goal weight exercise actually helps the pain, and definitly like an anti-depressant!

No amount of walking inside on a treadmill or whatever can equal breathing fresh air, and gazing at a beautiful blue sky, listening to the birds chirping. Can I get an AMEN! LOL! Sandy not a bible thumper just a Christian, and a bit o drama queen

I looked into the Auquafit classes, can't work it around my schedule.

I have Medicare, and am waiting for the YMCA by me to open (it's new) to look into what it might cover.

Thanks for the advice, I love this thread too! Missy got me to walk (it's killing me, but I'm doing it!)

I still do not walk. There are other things you can do. I bought a set of pedals that sit on the floor in front of me while I am on the sofa and I pedal. I was 330 when I started, bad hip, bad knee and two bad ankles. I started pedaling at 15 minutes and increased as I could and now I do an hour. I also go to a local public pool and have a routine I created that I do for one hour. Some days now I do both, but I do something everyday. You can do it! If you are interested in my routine for the pool just let me know.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
