I talked with my primary care doctor today about the lap band she believes it's a good idea for me but stated that on average you only lose about 30 pounds. From the success stories I have read on here that doesn't seem like the case. Can anybody relate to how much weight they lost compared to only 30 pounds? I'm confused do you lose a lot of weight or a little amount of weight? My ideal goal weight would be between 130-140 pounds that's 170-180 pounds I would have to lose. Please help!

Much love-Rebecca

In my experience I lost almost 30 pounds in the first 2 months (including what I lost on the pre-surgical diet) Now, I know that realistically I will not maintain that rate of loss, but everything that I have read is that you can reasonably expect to lose 1-2 pounds a month.

How much you lose is 100% up to you and how hard you're willing to work for it.

Btw, I'm sure your doctor meant well, but she couldn't be more wrong.

I've lost 158 pounds in the last 9 1/2 months and I'm still losing. That's a heck of a lot more than 30 pounds lol ;)

The first 30 lbs were easy it's after the 30 it's slowed down. Most doctors say you will lost between 40-60% of your excess body weight in the first year. How committed you are is directly coorilated to your success. So if you are committed you WILL lose more than 30 lbs.

I certainly hope that is not the case and from others here I don't think it is. I had my surgery in late July, I have lost 32lbs so far and I'll tell you it hasn't been easy but it's so worth it. I feel so much better and am looking forward to losing another 60!! I happened across a picture of myself that was taken in April, I had no idea it was as bad as it was. I'm happy to be on my way to healthier!!!

Banded 9 months, down 68 pounds. Think I hit 30 pounds around month 4. It is completely up to you. You will have to change your lifestyle. The band is a fabulous tool, but it will not stop you from making the wrong food choices, it will not stop the emotional eating, it will not stop the head hunger, it will not make you exercise. These are all thinks you have to do. If you do them then you can loose as much as you want.

Good luck.

I agree with all the previous posts. Your doctor misinformed you. It is about 40-60% of your excess weight they say you will typically lose (some more, some less). I think most of us lose that within the first few months.

I agree with all of the above. I've lost over 30 lbs preop & another8 lbs 9 days out.

When Drs say this I'm wondering if the idea is, if you change nothing about what you eat. You know like visiting MickeyDs or pizza Hut a couple times a week???

Maybe they're thinking how much and not what? Thoughts/opinions

If you want this bad enough, The sky is the limit!

As stated, how much you loose will be completely up to how hard you work at this. This is no miracle pill and the weight will fall off. You have to be conscience of what you are putting in your mouth and make sure they are good calories and be sure to exercise. I measure and weigh everything and only go to restaurants that I google to find nutrition information and make best choices for there. I log everything via myfitnesspal. So I started my journey July 22 on pre-op at 256.2, surgery was August 2 with a weight of 245 and as of today I am 216.8. So over the past 14 weeks I am down 39.4 pounds. So your doctor is wrong. I have had only one fill to date on September 11. Next fill is October 29. Could I eat more than I am supposed to, sure I can but I don't because the surery and my choice would be a waste. If you are thinking this requires no work, the you should not do the surgery. There is no quick fix to the weight we have all put on. This is hard work and requires one to follow the rules and do your part of keeping a journal, exercising and making good choices. The band is only a tool, if used improperly the tool will not work. Good luck with your decision.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
