Newly Banded. Day 3 Of Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I was just recently banded on Jun 6. I've been a strict clear liquid diet for the past 3 days, thankfully only 2 more days to go. Once I make it to the full fluids stage I'll be so so happy.

This is my first post - just wanted to see if any of you had any similiar issues or concerns when you were recently banded? My port site incision is VERY tender (I know this is common) but today I went back to work and ended up bleeding from the site onto my shirt. I was doing a little too much too fast and have tomorrow off to rest up.

I'm struggling to feel full on this clear liquid diet. I must admit I put some Peanut Butter on my finger and sucked on it for while. Overall it was less than 1/2tsp over 2 days. DO YOU THINK I DAMAGED ANYTHIN? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I just keep drinking more broth? More tea?

Can I be drinking too many Clear liquids during this phase? My clinic gave me a sample meal planner but there is no way I can make it with that little amount of fluilds or calories.

Well hope to hear back from soon you with an tips, advice or words of encouragement :)

I had lots of broth, Jello, popsicles, and Water. I really wasn't hungry for the first 2 weeks. I never worried about having too much, drink several times a day.

full liquids will be better, I love my Protein Shakes so I really felt like was getting some nutrition! I loved having cream Soups too.

make sure to drink as much water as possible, it helps everything!

you went back to work very early... what sort of job do you do? No... you wouldnt damage anything by sucking some Peanut Butter, im sure of that. Actually i dont think that there should be a limit on what you drink. Usually drs tell you to drink more than you can handle. if you arent having as much as you feel you need, have more fluids. more clear Soups, tea, Decaf coffee.... are you having Protein drinks yet?

You did return to work quite early so am not surprised u may have bled a little, just be careful and let your wounds heal before u do anything physical, u might need to just sit as your desk and do nothing :)

clear liquids arent designed to make u feel full, they are designed to help your healing process and not put any stress onto your stomach, you arent alone with feeling the way u do many bandsters intially feel like that .. but all of u need to get into the mind set that this isnt about feeling full, its about giving your body a chance to heal and doing what your doctor advised u to :)

stick with it and it will all work out in the end ... drinking fluids puts no stress on the band so drink away !

A good liquid to help u feel more satisfied is mixing some skimmed milk with some greek yoghurt and maybe some sweetner in it, good for u and Protein and u can make as liquid as u need ! it will help fill a hunger hole anyways :)

I don't think you hurt anything. If you are hungry drink more broth. There is only like 15 cals in a cup of broth. I do think you went back to work to soon.

Regarding Peanut Butter. I had to stop buying it. PERIOD. I was justifying eating it esp. early on because it was a mushie and a Protein. Only problem was I was eating it out of the jar; and one day noticed I was going through a small jar a week! You may want to check out PB2 http://bellplantation.com/. I have no connection with this company. They grind up peanuts and remove the oil; so you get peanut powder. You reconstitute it with Water. It can be added to Protein shakes and the taste is quite good. I even used it to make Cookies for my nephew's college care package when I ran out of regular Peanut Butter. For me I can have a small amount, get the peanuty flavor and be done. I don't over eat because the salt and sugar of regular peanut butter which we love is missing.

Wow everyone - thank you so much for your replies. I am not alone feeling like this LOL. I have new mindset towards this clear Fluid stage now - healling. It's only 2 more days, anyone can do anything for 2 days.

I have today to rest regarding work but do return to work tomorrow. I have a seasonal job at the Golf and Country Club so Saturday was spent roaming 27 holes on a golf cart! No wonder my incisions bled. But thankfully tomorrow and Tuesday I am stationed elsewhere.

As for the Peanut Butter I feel much better knowing a few of you did the same. I wish I was able to have skim milk but my suggested diet does not allow me milk products until Tuesday.

A typical day for my diet on Clear Liquids was suggested as:

Breakfast: 1 glass of herbal tea & 1/2 Jello

Lunch: 1 glass of clear chicken broth (no LUMPS)

Snack: 1 glass of apple juice

Dinner: 1 glass of clear beef broth

So needless to say I have drank more than the suggested. But thank you again for all your kind words of encouragement :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
