To Tell Or Not To Tell That You've Had Lapband Surgery Or Wls(Weight Loss Surgery)

Recommended Posts

I was banded April 11th. I'm not ashame and has disclosed this information to any and everyone. In my opinion, weight loss is a struggle. Yes... I have always worked out but the weight didn't bulge. I want people to understand my weight loss struggle.

I still struggle with this one. I have been banded for almost a year and a half now and have lost a good chunk of weight (over 70lbs). Because of all the blood, sweat, and tears (literally) that have come with this journey, I am proud of what I have managed to accomplish. I have told a few select people about the surgery, and while most of the responses have been positive or neutral, I have met a few people who decided to give me the whole "you could've done it without surgery if you tried harder" speech. It makes me feel bad when I see others who have lost just as much weight if not more than me without surgical intervention, but I feel I made the best decision for me. That being said, I have chosen to pick and chose the people I share my story with.

I don't tell anyone, only my parter knows. Not even my mother.

It's nobody's business.

I was banded Jan 2012. I have told no one. Just my choice, but several people where I work have had surgery and I just dont care to be part of the ongoing conversations that I have overheard.

You should never feel bad in the choice you made. Everyone is different. Be proud of yourself.

Definitely a personal choice and, just like getting the surgery, it's not one that we should ever be judged on. i kept it private to start with but 13 months later am happy to share my story. I sometimes think that if I had heard from someone who had had the surgery, I might have gone down this path sooner and saved myself several years of morbid obesity.

To tell or not to tell... definitely a personal choice. For me, being a very private person (IRL) I have chosen to discuss my surgery with few people. My DH knows as well as my mom and my two sisters..that's about it.

Banded for 6 years now. My rule was that I would only tell people if I thought it would help them.

I agree that everyone is different.

I finally told my dad because he's picking me up from the hospital, and I told one other friend who I know can keep a secret. It's a personal choice and for me I just don't feel like broadcasting the news (for now).

I've told my family, closest friends, as well as some co-workers. Most of them know my struggle with weight and the overall response has been very positive. Can't say I'll run down the street shouting it but it isn't a secret for me.

I chose NOT to tell anyone. It's no body else's business. I have struggled with weight by myself so I will struggle with losing it by myself. My DH knows, 1 friend, and people in my support group and that's it.

I wouldn't tell another fat person that I had the surgery because I wouldn't want them to make a decision based on what I did or what worked for me. It's a heavy burden to bear if they don't have the same results and get upset or what have you. I did research on my own, I read this board, I talked to my doctor. If another fat person had suggested it to me, I probably wouldn't have listened to them while making the decision. that's just me though, everyone has to do what is right for them.

My surgeon asked me to be the poster girl for the hospital's weight management program. That sorta outed me to the community. 99.9% of the feedback has been positive and I don't give a rip about the.1% that disapprove for some reason.

I told only a select few, my husband, son & daughter-in-law, sister and friend.

My husband and parents know, and 2 friends that have had WLS.

At work, I told them I have to have surgery to repair a hernia (true) and that the Dr told me to get to a healthy weight or it would come back. That explained the time needed off and the change in eating habits. I'll probably be open with it later, just not with my coworkers - most are pretty judgmental and I don't want to deal with that.

I chose not to tell anyone at work. Only my immediate family know about the surgery. The reason I didn't tell coworkers is b/c I know how bad they talk about people and look down on others for the slightest reason. When I came back from time off from the surgery, I just casually mentioned that I had hernia repair. Telling or not telling is a personal decision and only you know your situation. For me, I know nothing good would come from me telling anyone.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
