Looking For Help

Recommended Posts

Hi everything. I just started looking into the Lapband and I'm so conflicted. I'm 280lbs 5'4 with back problems and don't sleep well. My doc wants me to do a sleep study and think about Lapband. I'm just looking for someone to tell me the truth and answer some questions. Thanks

Well I guess I'm just trying to figure out if I can handle throwing up all the time like people say you do after banding. I've heard you can eat salad bc it gets stuck , you can drink even Water with meals and I drink alot while eating. Guess just figuring out if I can handle it and if all the negative is worth the outcome. I want to get healthy and nothing has worked in the past. I keep thinking about losing weight for my future kids and I think I can give up anything for that. But do I really want all the throwing up, loose skin, hair falling out, only eating a cup of food, getting put under etc

I can eat salad with no problems. Just small bites and chew it really well. It is true u can't drink with ur meals and I was really stressed about that but turns out its no big deal. U just don't do it hehe. Sometimes I time it for half an hour (that's how long I wait after eating) and sometimes it's several hours after before I drink just because I forget or get busy or whatever. It's really not the big deal I was afraid it would be

I have those same fears but they are diminishing by the day.this is my 3rd post op day and I have not experienced non of the bad stuff that other 3-4 day post op people have experienced.no horrible gas or really bad pain.I tolerate Clear liquids and going back to full liquids today.I focused on the negative just before my surgery and it was really scary but there is a lot of great information and inspiration here just keep reading and asking.:-)

I have not personally but there are people on here who have. They just take the Fluid out of your band. U don't need to remove the band or anything drastic

i have not thrown up once since i have been banded, granted it has only been 2 months. i don't think that throwing up is supposed to be a normal part of this deal. although i am not a big salad person i have eaten a few over the past two weeks and have had no issues. drinking and eating at the same time is a no no with the band, and has been something that i would gladly sacrifice to have my diabetes under control (which is after 2 months with the band)...i was also scared to death of going under and cried up until they wheeled me back, so i do understand your fear...please keep doing your research...only you can decide what path is best for you...i think we are all here for you:)

Just called my insurance and they told me I would pretty much be approved. I just need a psych eval which I am going to be therapist tomorrow and talk to a surgeon and do my sleep study which I have next week and I could be approved within 30 days

Good luck Bel12, I was just banded in march but my brother got his 8 years ago and my brother-in-law 4 years ago. They both say you only spit up if you eat too fast or take too big of a bite of food. Both say it is not what unbanded folks think "throwing up" is. One of them CAN eat salad, the other CAN'T. It is really individual. This website is an awesome resource. And lots of folks will answer any questions you have. Not everyone's hair falls out, and if some does - it WILL grow back as long as your nutritional intake is a good balance.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
