To Those Of You Who Say You Don't Have Time For Exercise...

Recommended Posts

Lapbandgal...well done! You've maintained your weight loss with exercise...who knew? And I'm sure we all lead busy lives as well and find the time to work our butts off..because that's what it's about!

Sarahbear...I totally agree! I have a bunch of different workouts that I use and I find that I have to switch them up all the time...because they say that when you do the same workout over and over your muscle just gets used to it and you stop seeing results...so as soon as you make your muscles do something different you see them again.

Other person...And you called me condescending! I understand that you want to keep one up-ing me every time you respond and it's pretty humorous. Are you a child? Or are we adults? The fact that you can type fast means nothing...(and if you must know I can too, last time I checked 99wpm) because it shows right now that you were online for OVER an hour! Looks like somebody had lots of free time on THEIR hands!

And do me a favor...quit wasting your valuable time that you could be using for exercise...cuz I'm not going to read one more childish thing you have to say.

All I did was say what a lot of people are thinking...but nobody has the guts to say..I have no desire to "change" anyone who cannot be changed.

You want to loose the weight without exercising...go right ahead...Don't be surprised when you gain it back because you aren't maintaining it (Again, things I've learned from my doctor and here).

I've said what I had to say...and I'm completely over talking about this... you want to continue it..have fun talking to yourself...

Drop it already! Wow I'm in Junior High. My momma always told me "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.". The negative comments have no place here. Everyone here is looking for encouragement. And while you are at it, stop being soo judgmental. Everyone here has flaws. Please think before you type 99wpm. Have a great day!

I'm not usually one to respond to drama, but this thread makes me very sad. This is supposed to be a place of help and encouragement, not lecturing and bickering. I think if we made exercise a priority in our lives to begin with, we wouldn't have lap bands and wouldn't be discussing this at all. All of us have our own journey and our own lessons to learn, and no one is more "right" than the other. I've been banded a year and I still learn new things from everyone here. As long as we lose weight and get healthy, we're all winners, right? Let's stop the insults and agree to disagree respectfully. We're all in this together.

I think one thing we all do not do is make time for ourselves. One of the reasons a lot of us are overweight. We put our energies into our kids and our husbands needs etc. We need to take the time to plan our meals, to sit and eat our meals, not running on the go. Time for us! It seems selfish, but I have come to realize it is necessary. Necessary for us to do otherwise we will not be happy, will not succeed in our personal goal and will shorten our own lives because we did not take the time. There are only so many hours in the day, yes...I know this all to well. My husband is self employed, we have 3 kids, 17 acres of land and farm to manage on top of it all. I am the worst...my needs come last. But getting banded is step one if reclaiming ME! Take the time!

idahoanmom, you make some valid points. I agree that we don't always make time for ourselves. It's hard to do sometimes, but we should.

I don't exercise everyday, but I do exercise 4-5 times a week and I feel good about that. I think the reason people are getting upset has to do with the harshness of the OP's posts, not so much disagreeing with what she said. We all know that exercising is beneficial to our health. No one is agruing that. Is it necessary for weight loss? Not always. I have a friend (not banded) that has lost 76 lbs over the past year without exercising at all. Not sure why she didn't, but nevertheless, she lost the weight in a healthy way. She cut out processed foods and started eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean Protein, etc. She has just recently started exercising, but didn't the whole time she was losing weight. Now, that definitely isn't my approach, but who am I to judge her methods? She did what worked for her and she succeeded.

We have no idea what circumstances others are faced with, what medical conditions might be a factor, or what their lives are like in general. We have no idea. Everyone's journey is not the same. What works for some, doesn't work for others. And no, not everyone exercises. So what....let it go.

To those of you who say you don't have time for exercise or you don't like to...I'm sorry but to me all I hear is excuses excuses. Yeah you may have a busy lifestyle but after getting the lapband put into your body to make a "lifestyle change" how can you do that without getting some exercise in? What is an hour out of your entire day? You have 23 hours to do everything else you need to do..and if you know you will tone your body and loose even more weight from it why wouldn't you take advantage of that? I think you guys need to step it up and quit making so many excuses...I have a life too...a job, family, boyfriend, pets, house to take care of, appts to go to in between everything else..and every single night I come home and get my exercise in. I have lymophdema in my legs and as much as it hurts to be on my feet and my ankles are so big it looks unhuman but I do not miss it...because I didn't get this lap band put in me to just sit back and watch the weight fall off...I'm working my ass off and don't understand why you can't either!!!

Do you want to end up like the people on here who are making a post in 1 or 2 years saying they only lost 30 pounds? If not, you need to make the change now...and if you don't want to..then I really don't understand why you got the band in the first place.

Thank you for this. I've been banded for a year now and haven't had any success. But...I have no one to blame but myself. Your post is just what I needed to read.

* I posted this before I read the entire thread. I have to say that I was a bit saddened by it as well. Your OP was just what I needed to read, the rest, not so much.

Congrats on your success and all the best to you in the future.

Hey Miss A! That's funny that you say that because that was really what I was trying to do before everything got out of hand. I'm so glad you got something out of it. And just to let everybody know- that's exactly what I needed as well to get my butt moving. My surgeon told me what I needed to hear and it made me do what I needed to do. If it wasn't for her sternness I don't know if I'd be where I am today. That's all I was trying to do...was give it back to anyone who cares...but I don't care if everybody "likes it" or not.

You know you're right! I hate to exercise... HATE IT! But at the end of the day when I do fit it in, I feel so much better. I had one week where I let myself slack off, and not only did I feel it physically, I felt it emotionally. I was really surprised by this, but it does truly help with all areas of our life! Yesterday I dropped some frozen items on my toe (not intentionally, lol) and it was super sore. I rested it last night, but today, I am raring to go, even though it may hurt. I'm just going to modify things up a bit so that I don't make it worse, but I WANT to exercise, and this part is great! My couch potato lifestyle cannot continue if I want to see true (and lasting) results!

Thank you for this reminder :)

Funny...but exercising has never been one of my favorite things...but I have been really trying to start doing it so that my 3 year old son can see that it fun. Every evening he jumps on my lap and tells me that we need to go for a walk. Of course I have tried to make exuses...but he doesn't buy it...we have to go. He enjoys being able to ride his bike while mommy walks and I have to admit that it is fun to get out of the house and spend time with him in "nature". Not exactly sure what we are going to do when the temps in Houston reach 112 degrees (as the weather experts are prediciting) but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I exercise daily. I have completed p90x , turbo fire and insanity. I'm 2 years out and haven't lost a ton of weight 37 pounds to be exact. I eat well most of the time. So although I agree with your point about exercising. Trust me when I say I'm doing it daily.

Let it be known, I've been known to lecture. Yes, I'm that kind of guy, so I understand you're frustration.

Let it also be known that I respect your motivation. It takes a lot to get through injuries. I get it. I had a traumatic brain injury that had doctors telling me that I would never work out again...but I didn't let that stop me.

Now, the gist of what you were trying to get at is fully legitimate, and I tend to agree. "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen." However, remember who it is that you're talking to and the goal of this whole forum. The goal here is to encourage people to lose weight. It's not so much of a "tough love" environment. Also remember that everybody reacts differently to "tough love". Some more positively than others.

All that said, while I understand and agree with what you're trying to say, I would recommend toning the "enthusiasm" down a little. haha.

(Oh, and on a side note, until my account got messed up, I had a few hundred posts.)

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
